Odd Small Button Bean Detectives

Hi all,

I recently picked up an odd set of Bean Detectives. I sent Joe some pictures and hopefully he will be able to post them soon.

The keyway on the odd set is much smaller than a standard Bean keyway and a typical Bean key will not fit it, one must be filed down substantially to fit.

The release button is also much smaller than the typical Bean, maybe half the size.

Both are the "Lightweight" Detectives and both have only the '82 patent date, no '84.

Anyone else seen this? Any ideas what it is for, or early production or something?

I wonder if they could be Hiatt's? Lars just acquired a pair (pictured in his recent additions) which he describes as much smaller than a regular Bean.

Hi!

I'm very interested to see Brad's pictures as I like the Bean cuffs a lot.

Damon is right, the Hiatt Bean Mod 122 is smaller than ordinary U.S. Bean cuffs,
even smaller than the Bean Detective. Also the lock buttons are also smaller but
not all Hiatt Bean have lock buttons though.

My set is stamped "Hiatt" and "England" on the bows close to the hinge. As to my
information it's not totally clear if the Hitt Bean were manufactured in the U.S
or in the U.K. Maybe Brad's set are Hiatt Bean, just without the stampings.

Nice cuffs Lars.
From my recent Post - Some Hiatt History - it seems to imply that they (Hiatt Bean 122) were made in England but sold mainly overseas.

"The 122 type of handcuff Id recently come across were brought out in the 1920s and were not a success, selling mainly abroad. As far as he can remember, Mr. La Trobe states that only one British Police Force, a small one which he believes was Doncaster ever purchased this style."


If they were selling to Africa, it would make sense to sell a smaller adjustable cuff as Joe L says elsewhere. Not having either a Bean or Hiatt Bean I cannot judge the size.

Hello,

...were they made? Stamped England, made in England. Similarly, thousands of pre-Second World War German chain nippers, made for export to the US, were stamped Germany (in English). For all intents and purposes, there were no exceptions.

I think when the pictures are up some of the questions will be answered, but a couple things...

1. The cuffs have the '82 patent date just like the regular Detectives;

2. Other than the keyway and release button, they are identical to the regular detectives. Just eyballing it, the set Lars posted looks a little different;

3. The cuffs themselves are the exact same size as the regular Detectives, only the buttons and keyways are smaller.
