Poor quality junk from India. They were shipped here by the boat load year ago. The links are made from bolts notice the thread.

I believe the yellow tag with "292" is indicitive of its value in dollars. It goes without saying that the decimal point should have been present between the 2 and the 9.

Howdy guys,

Thanks for the responses. I was guessing they were junk but figured it better to ask then assume. The 292 I believe is the auction number although it being a price tag is much funnier lol.

The people in India have been making these since I was a teenager(back in the mid 70's) when I first saw them down around one of the wharf's of the San Francisco waterfront bazaars. Back then they were being sold as horse hobbles, I thought they were junk then and still do today. You see them turn up on ebay now and then as slave shackles.

Okay, at the risk of opening myself up to ridicule. What the heck are these? Indian I assume, but old? How old? Should I bother getting a key for them?

They may be early Indian darbies which were good quality. At first glance they just looked like the plated modern junk. The end cap area looks interesting with the flair.

You know, Paul, I'd go slow about throwing those in the trash. I don't think I've seen anything like that. It's sort reminiscent of some of the Euro darbies, but it surely could be a Pakidarby.

Maybe our expert, Joe, will know.

They bear some conceptual resemblance to the routine Indian knock offs, not the ones posted by the OP, but these appear to be the genuine product.

The hinges are a folded strap, like the knockoffs, but look at the difference in finish.

The chain staples look like the KOs, and are not of much higher quality.

The swivel is of a similar pattern to the KOs, but is of vastly better finish. The KO swivel usually looks like it was made by a blind man with an angle grinder.

The bows are similar. The barrels are infinitely nicer than the KOs. I'd like to see the end caps.

The end cap is a smooth finish, no peen marks. The swivel, clevis and rings are electric welded by the look. These were bought at a military fair and my guess is they were a souvenir from WW2 - just a guess. I've not seen any modern knock offs like them either, but their construction is very similar.
