Pictures of Locks/Keys/Etc.

Hi,

I am working on a project and am in quest of many quality photos of some padlocks, bank and safe locks, combination locks, castle locks and keys, and ornate locks and keys.
I have been searching the internet for full sized pictures of these items but mostly I am finding them on pay services. Some of these cost $100 a picture. I would not mind paying a modest fee, but these are way out of line for a hobbyist.
I have seen many fine books on the subject and would love to find a source of online photos similar to what these books have to offer.

I appreciate any and all help with this.

This photo was taken using a DSLR camera, even an entry level model will produce great results.

First, set the camera to macro.

Always use a tripod, get a small one so you can get as close to the subject as possible.

Turn the flash off and use a desk lamp instead, preferably one of the bendable types, and try moving it around into different positions. You won't need to face the lamp directly at the subject.
The lighting is the key to producing nice photos. Experiment with low wattage globes in your lamp.
Try turning the ceiling light off and rely on your desk lamp.

This photo was taken on the floor, the background is a piece of clothing, two walls and a doorway. So nothing special there. Just experiment with the background that you place the subject on.

You will usually need to crop the photo to achieve the best picture, a photoshop program comes with most decent cameras these days. With this program you will be able to crop and resize the photo and experiment with every part of the picture, including brightness, contrast and color ballance etc.
Learning to use the program is probably the trickiest part.

As you can see from the original photo, the photoshop program has made all the difference.
Photobucket has reduced the size of the photo in this case to better suit the forum.

Lighting plays a major factor also, diffused tends to work better.

Mark, I have a boatload of lock photos that I took of my own collection. Many of the locks were photographed from all angles and sides so you will have to let me know exactly what you are looking for (front view only, front and back, keyway exposed, etc).
