One item that did not make the list and did not sell was S.A. French come along with holder Patent Feb. 23, 1892.

After the auction closed without a buyer I made an offer and got them.

Several of the items,the Rankin, the Maltby, the Cummings were broken cuffs sold by one dealer who carefully stated all their faults. That is why the prices are so low on those items.

I've seen those tough guys before. What a strange mixture of items. American cuffs, European hats, Australian "Gum' tree in the painted backdrop a silver handled stave in one belt, 2 unknown pistols and bow ties!

PS the "18 or 19th century leg iron shackles" small pic number 3 have just arrived. These were typically used on Australian Convicts. They are black and continue to lose a fine black rust on me after a light clean. They also smell very musty - maybe it's a combination of rust and black mould. Should I just give them a light oiling??

They seem to be a low grade iron. Where the chain joins the shackle there is a lot of wear. The chains have a low pitched rattle unlike any other chains I have.

I think a light oiling is always a good idea for iron artifacts. I use gun oil and a rag. Someone once posted a wax mixture that might be preferable, as it has a hard, dry finish.
