Some time ago MUM the official magazine for the Society of American Magicians published a short theory of mine on creating the effect that looks like you can open locks with your mind.

The handcuff king act died with vaudeville.

Today's audiences want cool and fast new escapes that are things they have not seen before.

Duelling escape masters, gimmicked locks that open with mind power, and handcuff king type acts would obviously all be fake set ups in the minds of modern jaded audiences.

It is modern times. Not old school.

There is nothing old school about this but old school works all the time if you know what your doing. Dean Gunnerson works old school acts all over the world with standing ovations.

The Handcuff King act is not dead at all. The audience never tires of the police locking up an escape artist and they never tire of seeing a lot of different handcuffs.

One item that works well with Opening locks with your mind" is the gaffed Hamburg 8 cuff.
While having them put on a spectator for examination make a fist and put them in baggies. Them have them taped with masking tape.
Now have the cuffs placed on you correctly. Do not make a quick opening. Move very slow like in a telekinesis key trick. The cuff will pop up and look as if it opened up on it's own.
If you use the correct facial expressions it will take away some from any wrist movement. I have done this many times and it is very effective for a good performer. Norm

I would like to defend the idea of concepts or un finished ideas. In my fifty or so years in escapes I have created many ideas for myself and others. Most are recorded in escape magazines or other forms and I can't count them all.
Some years ago I wrote up and idea in Joe Tanners Escape Magazine. It was the exploding or imploding building escape. I benefited by getting the idea published. Joe benefited by getting an article.
Copperfield called and made a deal to use it on his special so he benefited. Criss Angel used it and he benefited as did Mark Cannon for escape consultant.
Then there are all the people who got work because of it, assistants, film crew, explosives experts and others.
I like concepts and being able to watch them develope over the years. Norm

Have to admit Norm is correct when it comes to his concepts...
they have been used by myself as well as Copperfield,Angel and many otheres.
and yes many have benefited and have been inspired by his unique ideas and concepts

I liked David Copperfield's version of this escape/illusion but I think Criss Angel really blew it. That was, hands down, THE worst escape/illusion I have ever seen Criss do.
