That certainly appears to be the real deal! I assume that stamped on one or both mitts is "Patented March 10-'25"? Care to share the story of how you come about obtaining a pair?

The story is my Grandfather got them in 1942, He worked at the cf&I steel mill in Pueblo Co. during the war, they where doing steel drives. The mitts where in a shipment from the state hospital in Pueblo Co. He got them for a joke. He was going to return them but he forgot them in the shed for years.
You can tell that they where used a lot. You can see the state inmates knuckles imprints in the steel. I would like to know value estimate.

Thanks for the sharing the your story, that's exactly the kind of thing I was hoping you would share with us. As far as value goes...well the exact value depends on how bad someone wants one. This would only be of real concern if you are considering selling it. If that is the case, open it up to offers on this sight and you'll find out rather quick the best value.

Hello,
I received a nice larger photo (same shot but larger) of this pair of Mitts. They're not bad; some rust, a few dings or small dents. My
question is why doesn't the thumb or wrist parts line up? In the larger photo I received parts are separated. One wrist chain is open. If the
handcuffs were in then open position it would account for this. Is it in the open position? Parts look a little bent but it could be just the
photo. It would be great to see larger photos of both sides. I for one would certainly be intersted if they were for sale! John Bushey

Sorry to have to bring this up. Am I the only one to realize that johnlocksmith has just acknowledged that these Mitts are stolen property, and actually belong to the U. S. government?

Let's see Eric, You may have missed the part that these items were delivered to a Scrap Dealer during a metal drive during WW II.

And as for taking the item from the Scrap dealer ? What facts do you have to support a theft? How do you know the foreman or boss didn't say; take em' home if you like them?

And besides Deputy Dog couldn't persue a theft considering the Statute of Limitations would have experied 66 years ago.

Great contribution you made since you can't comprehend the story as told !!

Really? This man comes to this sight for advice and help and then shares his story with us about how he come to own these awesome cuffs through the past generations of his family. Instead of admiration, you accuse him of possesion of stolen property by way of his grandfather 60+ years ago. I reiterate...Really?

Deputy Dog Thank you, The real story is that my grandfather was a very honorable man. He would not have taken them without permission. What the handcuff mean to me is to remind me of a great Man. My Grandfather work at the steel mill for 40+years. He was draft deferment during world war II at the orders of the us government. He work at the blast furnace for the war years 16 hours a day 6 or 7 days a week. He put his life on the line most days. He had very close friends kill in blast furnace accidents. He made the steel we used to win the war. The man I remember is a kind and loving Grandfather with a great sent of humor. He loved a good practical joke. I could tell you some great story of some great practical jokes, he did. I can only imagine what practical jokes he used them in. As a little boy I had seen the handcuff and played with them in the shed. When my Grandfather passed, I lost a true friend. Years after his passing my mom give me box with the handcuffs in it. My Grandfather had written my name on the box. I kept them in the kitchen on top of cabinets for years, where I could see them. They reminded me of my Grandfather. One day I was watching tv, you know the show pawn stars.

Thanks for the pictures John.

The story you told is an important part of the history of this set of mitts. If you have the name of the hospital keep it with the history. The pictures show the knuckle marks very clearly and gives a real chill as to their use.

The comments about condition that John Bushy are good ones. One reason for the mitt being bent may be due to their usage at the hospital. They were not a popular piece of equipment to use and they had a short history of being used.

I agree, the mitts look a little beat up. Given their history, it would be astounding if they weren't. Do keep the history with the cuffs. That sort of provenance and back story tends to increase their value a little. You can't prove it, of course, but the back story just makes the cuffs a little neater to own.

It sounds like your grandfather was a great guy.

Good luck.

As a side note, anyone who thinks it is significant that a pound of scrap metal was swiped from the bin, sixty years ago, because it is useful or amusing, needs to get their skivvies loosened. The world is a better place because those cuffs were rescued from becoming razor blades.

John,
Your pair on mitts are real. The picture that Paul posted with the mitts framed are mine. To me the history of any cuff is important and with my mitts I was able to trace their history which is posted elsewhere in this Forum. They came from NE Colorado and I was able to go there and do research on them. I wrote up their history with a copy attached to the back of the frame.

John Bushey wrote a book on the history of the mitts, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in their history. If any one is interested I will send them a copy of my history.
