Sandblasting old Restraints?

Good morning everybody,

does anyone here have experience with sandblasting handcuffs? I'm talking about removing serious rust and grime that even electrolysis cannot solve.

It would be great to see some before / after photos.

I know someone who could do it for me, but I'm not sure which cuffs to give him to try on.

Hi Nils, I would not sand blast as it is very abrasive. bead or soda blast, it will knock of dirt etc. but won't remove metal.

Good Night everybody

I see the major risk in sand getting (with high pressure) inside the locks, that will never come out again.
Result would perhaps be good looking cuffs, but without any function.

Abrasive blasting will leave you with a gray matte finish, a good substrate for painting, but without any shine, and literally aching to start rusting immediately.

Bead blasting is less aggressive, but will still leave a silvery matte finish, looking for moisture to start rusting.

Soda blasting is less aggressive. They used it to clean the copper of the Statue of Liberty.

I might give it a try with a couple of old ones, just to see how it works. You're right about the locking mechanism, though. I'll keep you posted.

Hi, if you can blow sand into the mechanism, then you can blow it out again. Don't worry about the mechanism, just leave a key in the keyhoel so not too much gets in and there will be little to get out afterwards.
