Bean Ball and Chain For Sale

Hello, I have a nice ball and chain that I am considering selling. This ball and chain has a Bean Patrolman leg iron on it (about 90-95% nickel plating is left on the cuff), it is in great working condition; the springs are very strong, it locks tight on all 4 positions and does not pull open at all, it has a working key (original-?), but it looks like someone at some point has opened the lock case from the bottom, repaired it and re-peened the lock case pins (see photos below....there are clear up close photos of this area) However, the hinge and clevis area show no evidence of ever being worked on; they look great. The chain has several hand forged oblong links on it and a longer section of twist chain that looks like it was from the Bean Patrolman leg irons (about 70% of the nickel plating remains on it) and every link in the chain, large and small, twist and oblong, is forge welded. The ball is solid cast steel and weighs 14 pounds (the whole unit weighs about 16 pounds). The ball and chain itself has a beautiful baby-smooth dark brown patina.....take a look at the pictures below:

In viewing the numerous photos I don't see that the chain links have much wear or thinning of the links from the friction that would normally be present ?

Any other opinions as to why the chain links are relatively prestine?

ON many Bean Handcuffs we see this "T" stamped on the Clevis. Does anyone have any
thoughts on what this stands for?? Also, is it just me or why does the key have not
a cut with the normal two bits?? The lock has been taken apart, but what could have been done
to allow this key to work. Just curious. Michael, since you have it what is the

Tower & Lyons was a major supplier of police equipment in the late 19th and early 20th century. There catalog carried their own cuffs of course, but also the various Bean cuffs.

The "T" stampings on the hinges of Bean cuffs look like they were applied with a hand stamp, not a factory mark.
I think Tower applied these marks to the Bean cuffs that they sold.

My Bean Prison cuffs have a ward plate that necessitates a two-bitted key to open the lock. Many, however, do not have this plate in the lock works. Perhaps this is because Bean's outer pattern was used by several makers and many omitted it to cut costs.

I have a quite large selection of Bean cuffs as I like them a lot. Some of them have a
ward plate that requires a key with two bits. Some of them don't and they will open
with a key with only one bit. I actually have an original key with only one bit.



As John pointed out; the lock on Michael's cuff has been opened for repair. There is
also a drilled hole on the back of the cuff that is not original.

I suspect that the double-bitted key was more prone to breakage in the lock and thus became the inspiration for Lyman H. Cobb to conceive of "The Improved Bean Handcuff" A.K.A. The Bean Cobb.

Often times a prisoner will get something stuck in the lockwork while trying to escape by way of an improvised pick.
We had this happen with a pair of modern cuffs once, but that's another story for another day.

The ball is solid cast steel and weighs 14 pounds (the whole unit weighs about 16 pounds). The ball and chain itself has a beautiful baby-smooth dark brown patina.....take a look at the pictures below:
