Found Handcuffs in old box ...

Hello everyone.

I was referred to this forum from the PEERLESS website for ID and value information.

I am a first time poster and new handcuff owner. I purchased a box of miscellaneous items from an estate sale and I found a set of heavy handcuffs with a key in the bottom of the box. I do not know anything about handcuffs, but if anyone can tell me about these I would be intertested in knowing more about them. I collect old antiques and would be curious to know just how old these are. Thanking you in advance for any advice you can offer to help me learn about my new found item. They are in very good condition - so maybe a rough estimate of value would be nice. ($25, $50, $100 etc.) I do not know what I would ever use them for ... is there a reason to keep working handcuffs around (other than for the obvious X-rated reasons)? I am sure that as collectors, you may have put them to good use at some point ... I may regret asking this question ...

They appear heavy duty and I do not think that they are a "TOY" item.
They are silver (not sure of metal?) with a single key that works and 2 oval links conncecting them.
All etching on them are as follows:

It sounds like a peerless model 3 to me. they sell on ebay in the 40-70 dollar range usually. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

After browsing around a while on the websites - I think I may have located it above.
I think that it may be the 1925 PEERLESS MODEL 2 EARLY CHROMED?
It seems to resemble that photo the most.

How long were these manufactured for to give me an idea of the age?
Is this a very common handcuff or something that would be nice to hold onto as a bit of history.
Worth only $25 or $50 but a nice conversation piece?

After your reply I found some PHOTOS and I cannot figure out how to copy and paste to this forum ... so you will have to just look at the following link for the 1925 PEERLESS MODEL 2 EARLY CHROMED. By photos, that is the closest to what I have.

It looks just like the Model 2 and looks more like chrome than nickel to me, but I do not know what the numbers mean.
They may help to identify it a little better?

Basically the difference between model 2 and model 3 is the style of key that you have. If it is a newer style key its a 3. Also on the cuffs it will have a keyhole pin in the center. On a model 2 the key will have a male extension on the tip that fits into a hole on the keyhole of the cuff. You should be able to see all the way through the cuff if that is the case. So recap version 3 has pin built into cuff. version 2 has pin on the end of the key.

I can see through the keyhole and there is a male extension on the end of the key. I think therefore it is a Model 2 in the chrome.

If that is the case, is the value still under $100? I have enjoyed browsing sights this evening about handcuffs and reading about the HANDCUFF history. If what I have read is correct, for PEERLESS ... the serial number is the manufacturing NUMBER from PEERLESS. Does anyone know when this particular serial number was made? #58808?

price generally depends on the condition of the cuffs. But yes i would still say the value is well below the 100 dollar mark. Still most likely in a 40-70 dollar range. The reason i collect is i find it very interesting, so many different styles of cuffs were made. Value usually only goes up the older they get. If you are looking to sell those, ebay is generally your best bet. Start your auction low, don't end it early for anyone's offer. Just keep one thing in mind, most collectors bid within the final few seconds, so don't get discouraged if the price is low during the auction.

I wanted to thank everyone for helping me to learn a little bit about the world of handcuffs. It was interesting browsing the internet and reading about the history of handcuffs last night (I must lead a boring life?!). Even though these are not a treasure value-wise, I think I will hold on to them as my first pair of REAL working handcuffs. They do not take up a lot of space and they opened my world up to a whole new adventure. On my future treasure seeking pursuits of antiques ... I will now be looking at estate sales and garage sales for OLDER HANDCUFFS, too ... who knew?
