Hello everyone,
Here are three padlocks made by companies that manufacture handcuffs. Two are Romer & Co.
padlocks, one a key lock and one a push-key lock. The 3rd is a scarce Tower Lyon padlock.
Does anyone know of other padlocks made by companies that also manufacture handcuffs??
I'm looking for older handcuff companies, not newer. The key in the first photo
is a Tower Handcuff key for scale. Thanks, John Bushey

although, they may actually be a padlock maker that made shackles, but still kinda fits
How bout Hiatt and the end locks they made
How bout the three chambered George Porter Houston Push Key lock?

Hi John,

In addition to the wares from Romer that you have as examples, they also produced numerous sizes, styles & configurations of "Scandanavian" style padlocks as well as countless railroad switch & car-locks most stamped with their name as well as some plain-jane non-branded locks.

Also as a side note, I know of at least one Yale padlock out there engraved for the "Pauly Jail Building co".

i have a nice Froggatt padlock as well as a Hiatt smaller than endlock padlock.

Thanks much! Can't believe I forgot about ER padlocks. I knew of the Hiatt end locks, and Hiatt
screw key lock, as well as Frogatt. Never even heard of a Houson padlock. Is it in Arnalls book?
And Michael, Great to see the maniac Mitts video. Glad you saw Fox, and would love to see you soon
at a convention as well. I know of another few Romer padlocks I don't have either. I had the idea of
doing an article on padlocks made by handcuff manufacturers. Of course, although there is no known
example, Lorey also made a Lorey padlock, similar in design to the handcuff. I just picked up a Hiatt
Home-office pattern end lock. anyone out there with any other padlocks by makers of handcuffs??

Hi John, I have a Romer that I picked up in Salem, Mass. earlier this year. Have not gotten around to making a key for it yet....maybe later this year. Here are some photos:





Also, this is kind of a reverse thing, The Master Padlock Co. had their name stamped into Hiatt handcuffs in the 1970's:





And finally, no one mentioned Chubb yet. I have some Chubb cuffs but sadly, no Chubb padlocks currently in my collection or I would post some pics.



On a side note, I had a couple of padlocks that have the name "Harvard" on them. After a little research, I found that neither one was made by the Harvard Handcuff Co. However, they are neat padlocks nonethe less.

also WINCHESTER, the locks are old but i don't think they made cuffs that are very old.

not exactally cuffs but HUMANE RESTRANTS CO. made padded hand and leg restrants witch were fitted onto a locking belt pat.date 1881.

Here's a good picture of a Romer unless Ron Spitz got a better picture than I did. We happened to be visiting an old prison last week. As time permits, we will be showing more pictures...

John, I think I just obtained a Tower & Lyon padlock. Here is a very tiny photo:

I can not get the photo to enlarge. Sorry. I will shoot some photos after it arrives. I am able to see the photo fairly large from my computer but I can't save it that way. On my end, I can see the stamping on the shackle and it says, "Tower & Lyon NY". It was being sold under the heading, "TCAER & LYON Padlock". This one is a little different than yours......it has a different shape keyway and there is no chain clevis. Anyway, just wanted to update this thread with this new discovery. More details and photos when it is in hand and I make a working key for it.

Well, the lock showed up yesterday and with the naked eye (and in a smaller photo), the stamping looks just like it says TC AER&LYON.N.Y. However, after looking at it under a 10X magnifier, it looks like it says TOWER&LYON.N.Y. The "A" is the center of the W with weak imprinted sides and the "C" is an uneven O. Also, there is no patent date or any other info on the lock. (Photos below) Sorry I had to leave the giant photo as big as I did but I couldn't crop the it without losing all of the detail.

John, thanks for posting this thread.....if I never knew about Tower making padlocks, I would have never took a second look at this little guy.
