The top two items are a couple of primitive cuffs sold on German eBay. I don't know anything about them. Can anyone tell us anything more about them? The top US item was a nice Adams handcuff, but the bargain cuff of the year was a Romer leg iron that someone bought as a $85 buy it now deal.

Hi Joe,

I will post additional pics of the leg-irons and the handcuffs as soon as possible.

Here is one auction I would like to add; it is somewhat off-topic but might be of interest for a handcuff collector anyway.

Best wishes,

Michael

Hello everyone,

here are some pictures of the handcuff:

The seller of this cuff sold the item on behalf of a third party, and he was told that they are of German origin; when I first saw them it came to my mind that they resemble Ian's Spanish Execution Manacale that I have in my collection.

I consider these to be German and pre-Berliner, but this surely is just an assumption. I would be very happy to get any information about these cuffs that is available, so please share your opinion, thank you very much!

Pictures of the leg-irons will follow soon.

Best wishes,

Michael

Hello again,

here some pictures of the leg-irons as promised. Each of the lockcases is stamped "D.R.G.M.", the abbreviation for "Deutsches Reichs Gebrauchsmuster", meaning something like "German Emperial Trade Mark", proving that the item is of German origin. Unluckily the numbers are rather worn, so it will take some time to find out the patent information.

The irons are extremely heavy and they have four locking positions. In the middle of the chain there is an S-shaped extra link, probably for attaching the irons to handcuffs or to a fixed object.

On the irons there are traces of black paint, a feature often found on Berliners and so-called "Horst Stein" restraints. As it seems there was a habit of painting restraints black in Germany before 1945.

Best wishes,

Michael

Hello everyone,

currently there is an ebay auction for the reproduction of a photo related to Harry Houdini. On this photo there is the handcuff that I bought some time ago and about which I still don't know anything. Here is a part of the picture with the cuff in question marked:

Do the Houdini experts have any idea about this manacle?

Thanks and best wishes,

Michael

And does anyone have a better copy (or possibly the original) of the photo where the description of the cuff is readable?

Michael

Hi Michael,

Realy cool!!! To get a better copy with readable text would give us some interesting information.

Now you only have to find another photo where the nice leg irons are included so we can learn something
about them too.

Best,

Lars

HI Michael,
The "Spanish Execution Manacle"; I do not know it's origin, nor do Houdini Collectors.
I have seen the cuff on a board, and also played with another original in a private collection.
Houdini had it on the board, and the sign says, "Spanish Execution Manacle". Now, slightly better
photos do exist in Houdini's book Handcuff Secrets, published 1910. They are still no great photos.
If you'd like I can scan that page and send it to you. The cuffs in Houdini's book are in groups, and the photos are small, so again they are not a lot better. The same photos also appeared in several other Houdini books. They also appeared in a Hardeen pitchbook. I'll look for the best photo of it, and get it scanned.

John

PS--Houdini also writes about each cuff in his book. I'll tell you what he said. We all know
that he was a master of publicity, and what he said about it could have been just a story.

The following is the best photo I could find of the "Spanish Execution Manacle" It is from
The Great Houdini Handcuffs and Legirons by Dick Wresch, 1961.
It contains the photo and text of the item.

John

In the 1910 book by Houdini entitled Handcuff Secrets, there is a photo of this cuff along with 4 other
pieces. It says, about the cuff, "Spanish Manacle used on prisoners about 1600 when sentenced to be
burned to death".

Hi John and Mark,

thank you very much for your information and additional pictures! I am very sure that the cuff that is shown in the Wresch book is the same like the one I won on ebay. So, it is sure that cuffs like these were used on Houdini in Austria, but that they came from Spain may have been made up by Houdini.

From my point of view my cuff looks "too new", I would say 19th century, than that it could have been used in Spain during the time of the Inquisition.

More ideas anyone?

Again, thank you very much,

Michael

HI,
The "Spanish Execution Manacle" pictured in the link a few posts above was seen on a trip I took a few summers ago. Mark Lundblad, Gordon Gluff, Fred Pitella, and Joshua Ohlmeier met up for varying parts of a trip. We saw the Davis Gun museum (Gill collection), Joshua's collection, Karl Grice's collection, and enjoyment was had by all. A private collector we saw also has one of these cuffs.

John

PS--I wish it was in my collection!

We had two locksmiths there and a million guns and a tank available to shoot ourselves out. This should have been no problem to split up all of the cuffs amongst the collectors present if you just wouldnt have been too much of a chicken John. I think you and Mark were complaining about it being too hot to run from the cops...and it was only like 80 degrees.
