they have their original key
and work perfectly

I can't tell you much about these other than they are French and I LIKE them! Very nice leg irons; good patina!!!

Il s'agit du modèle officiel utilisé au bagne de Cayenne (supprimé vers 1947).
L'anneau central servait la nuit ou pour les déplacements en groupe.
L'administration Française a détruit la plupart de ces pièces de sorte qu'elles sont rares.
Le prix doit ètre autour de 300. Voir l'estimation d'ATAME.
Fabrication en acier moulé,légère et très robuste. Fermeture par vissage simple et efficace.

I certainly defer to clcl's knowledge of the history of this item. Further, this model of leg irons is clearly the model for those currently produced by Rivolier. Whether this older version was actually made by Rivolier is another question, since I don't know when Rivolier came into being.

I have to take exception to one reference made by clcl, however. I have a set of these older leg irons and they are forged, not cast. I also think that they might be ordinary iron, instead of steel.

Bonjour,
J'ai eu plusieurs exemplaires de ces entraves et toutes avaient les mèmes défauts de moulage qui sont la preuve du mode de fabrication. J'ignore la nature exacte du métal utilusé.
Rivolier est peut ètre un sous-traitant du fabricant initial qui était sans doute -comme souvent
en France- une "Manufacture Nationale" comme pour les armes (MAS, MAF,etc...).
J'ai vu sur les photos présentées les mèmes défauts de moulage que sur l'exemplaire que j'ai encore.

When comparing old restraints there are ofte small details that differ.
I checked my set and found two differences:

1. The chain on this set is thinner and the links are somewhat longer.
2. The bows around the clevis seems to be thinner.
3. The clevis differ. The ones on the pictures above is made in one peice. On my
set the clevis is made from three pieces and welded together.

I can not tell if this set is forged but I don't believe so.
