Can anyone enlighten me on this style of lock - origin within UK or mechanism. Obviously not a threaded bolt but maybe a hooked bolt on spring.
I believe there is a darby style handcuff with the same mechanism but I cannot recall where I've seen it.

Years ago, Don Stewart re-publishes a series of books and various lock catalogues. In one of these I remember seeing the name of this side key darby mechanism as 'Whiltshire'. The actaul title of the work elludes me but I think it was a 19th C book by Pitt-Rivers. Hoping some one else may have a copy as I have misplaced mine.Click to expand...

Thanks to all of you for your input. It is good to see the cuffs in such good condition compared to the End lock. Obviously similar in manufacture if not the same. Very interesting and i'd suggest very, very old.Click to expand...
