Excellent. I'm glad to hear it. But, actually, it was more than several years ago, and it was more than one collar. It began in 1999. If you'll recall, we did a trade and part of the deal was that you would fabricate for me a copy of an unusual leg iron which I found in the Paris Police Museum. You needed part of the job done by a blacksmith friend of yours, but he never came through. After about a year we agreed that I would take, in lieu of the French copy, two of your Palmer-style collars, one with holes and one without. But you hadn't made them yet and you were going to get back with me when they were ready to ship. I asked you about it a couple of times, in 2000, but they weren't ready yet. Since I considered you a friend, and rather than be a nag and pressure you, I just opted to write it off and let it go. This all does ring a bell, doesn't it?

But do I understand that you have only one of the collars ready; half of what you owe me? How long do you think it will take you to make the other one. If you ship them together you can save on postage. And, after all, I'm in no hurry.

Holding these in my hands long before Griffin got them and when they were the property of the late Ontario, Canada cuff collector Dennis Wright.

I was in Wright's living room the night a friend of his phoned from an Ohio gun show and asked him if he should pay the $200 price tag the original owner at the show was asking for them.

Dennis, being a cartridge collector and head of the Ontario Gun Collectors association had just recently begun to collect cuffs and asked me to get on the phone with his friend to try and find out what kind of cuffs they were.

Intially, by the way his friend described them on the phone I thought they were a Darby and for a few moments there Dennis was not sure he wanted to pay $200 USD for a simple set of common Darbies.

It was only after his friend told me that the locking bolt was so near the entrance of the keyway that you could touch it with a finger tip that I realized these were not a simple Darby.

I told Dennis to take a chance and buy them sight unseen.

He did... for $200 USD.

About a month later I was back at his house and saw them in person for the first time.

I have to admit... although they were illustrated in the U.S. Handcuffs patent booklet, neither Dennis or myself had any idea of just how rare they were.

And some years later when I had grown out of touch with him, Dennis parted with them for what was no doubt a pittance compared to their actual worth and what they were later sold again for.

I get quite a smile when I remember that Dennis thought the $200 USD price tag was too high and for a split second he almost turned these down.

The owner of this cuff has sent me photos and requested that I post them for him. Please allow me a couple hours to get back to the office and I will get them on here for all to see. They will be for sale and I'll let Dave elaborate on that when he gets the chance.
