Rankin Size

Just wondering about the sizes of Rankin handcuffs. I always thought there were two sizes. What was considered a standard size and a larger "long bow". I encountered a Rankin that is slightly large than the long bow.

Measuring from the center of the hinge pin to the edge of the swing arm I have the following measurements.

Standard 3.25

Long Bow 3.50

Extra Large is close to 3.70

I just wonder if the larger size is out there or maybe even other sizes.

What a GREAT find. Anyone else have this extra large size?? This is definitely a great piece of information for those trying to collect
it all! I also have an addition to the Romer handcuff family. I'll try to post that soon. There is a small and large handcuff, small and large
leg iron, and the small leg irons comes with two different bows! I'll post photos soon. Looking forward to seeing other people post about their

Thanks John. I'll post some photos with measurements soon. Without a measuring device it is really hard to tell them apart unless they are next to each other. The standard Rankin seems to have a more rounded arc in the top of the cuff.

Just had a great day with Mark Lundblad and Joshua and Sarah Ohlmeier; visiting in the St. Paul, MN area. We all saw lots of
handcuffs, and among them noticed we had three sizes of Rankins. Here is a photo. The largest size is 3.75 inches from
center of hinge rivet to outside edge of bow. The medium size one is 3.5 inches. The small is 3.25 inches. Notice difference
in thickness of the bows as well. How many of you have this extra large 3.75 inch size?? Thanks Damon for giving us all

Here are the photos of the three sizes of Rankins with the measurements. Again from the center of the hinge pin to the end of the lock is 3.25"for the standard, 3.50" for the long bow, and 3.75" for the extra large bow.

The long chain handcuff has two different size cuffs, the long bow and the extra large bow.

So far there has only been one complete set of the extra large Rankins reported.

Great photos........I wasn't aware that Rankins were ever offered in a long chain model.

Spencer- I have never seen a factory long chain either- and these are not factory. I'm pretty sure they were made up from spare parts for a display.

I was so busy trying to determine if the locks were fuctional I nearly over looked the extra large cuff. I noticed a size difference in the cuffs but assumed it was a standard cuff with a long bow cuff. I can't imagine a factory made pair with different size cuffs regardless of the linkage.

Congratulations Paul. You have the second known complete set. I suspect there are more out there but probably fewer than the other two sizes.

Here are both of my Rankins



This is the small one

Unfortunately, the large cuff has one side that is a little deformed, which I hadn't noticed until photographing and measuring. If you examine the first photo, you'll see the larger cuff's left side is "squashed" a bit, making the measurement from center-of-hinge pin to the end-of-cuff closer to 3 3/4 than 3 1/2. The other cuff of the large Rankin is closer to 3 1/2 (see below.) So, I now believe I have the more common 3 1/4 & 3 1/2.
