ADAMS APPLICATION DATED CUFFS ?

HI ALL AND MERRY XMAS,i obtained and now received the following item:

it is my belief that these were made shortly after W.V. ADAMS applied for his patent and he assumed that this was the date of the patent,they are marked PATD. APRIL.24.1862 they are very clearly marked, and i think this was the date he made application.

I have not yet ordered the big book of patents yet.

can anyone confirm/ deny that this was the date?

The seller also sent me a letter along with them,thanking me for my purchase and some history ;

The cuffs were found about 20-25 yrs ago under some floorboards in the 4th floor attic of the
BERKSHIRE county jail and house of correction at 264 second st. in Pittsfield, MA.
Civil War veterans constructed the facility in 1870. The 4th floor was the location of the gallows that held at least one execution by hanging.The website bcsoma.org has a few pics of the" old jail"
The attic was located directly under the cupola shown in the pic of the old facility.

YES I KNEW THERE WAS A RE-APPLICATION DATED april 5th 1864
these are def. marked april 24 1862 a little under 2 months before the june 17 1862 patent was issued i think WILLIAM ADAMS applyed on this date,then found out or figured out that the patent was not issued yet and then began stamping them PATD. APPLIED FOR, then when it came through he then stamped them PATD.JUNE 17 1862 I have a set of both of the others and all three sets are identical they are all 8 notched with half moon notchs this set didn't have a key but one of the others had 2 orginal keys which i used to open them with ,they were a little stiff but with a little exercise of the bows and hinges and a good wipe down with a clean rag they are excellent
condition and the springs are very strong!

On the last picture in the listing the keyhole looks very interesting. The space for the key bit is round as if it was drilled before or after assembly. In most keyholes the space for the key bit is rectangular with smooth sides. One might think that they forgot to make the slot in the casting and drilled it out after assembly. Interesting.

WHEN COMPARING THEM THE SLOTS ALL LOOK CLOSE TO BEING THE SAME,THE TWO KEY'S WHICH CAME WITH THE APPLIED FOR SET THE BITS ARE INDEED ROUND,THE THIRD KEY LOOKS AS THOUGH IT WAS ALSO ROUND BUT SHOWS WEAR MAKING IT MORE RECTANGULAR LOOKING.THEY ARE ALL ORIDGENAL KEYS

Hello,

Yes, the date on which the Letters Patent were issued was 17 June 1862. Although the application date is not stated in the patent record, it indeed must be 24 April 1862, the date stamped on the handcuffs. There is no alternative that makes sense.

For anyone wanting the patent number, it is 35,576.
