I am curious which of the restricted key models (1 or 2) people actually have. I have D, E, G, L, N( the common one) and R. Interestingly with one exception all my restricted models are Model 1 cuffs. The exception is a Model 2 E model, although I also have a Model 1 E.

Model 1 cuffs have raised rivets, model 2 cuffs have smooth rivets.

So I am curious what models (1 or 2) of restricted key cuffs do people have?
As far as I know the other three keys that were used are H, M and S.

I am curious which of the restricted key cuffs (Versions 1 or 2) people actually have. I have D, E, G, L, N( the common one) and R. Interestingly with one exception all my restricted cuffs are Version 1 cuffs. The exception is a Version 2 E model, although I also have a Version 1 E.

Version 1 cuffs have raised rivets, Version 2 cuffs have smooth rivets. The earliest Version 1 cuffs (Version 1 A) have identical cuffs, the later ones (Version 1 B) have mirror image cuffs. These Version designations are not official. S&W just called them all Model 94.

Here is my complete list, neglecting the common key N examples.

Key D Version 1A (marked)
Key E Version 1B and Version 2 (neither marked)
Key G Version 1A (marked) and 1B (not marked)
Key L Version 1A (marked)
Key R Version 1A and Version 1B (both marked)

The other thing of interest is the serial number. My Version 1A cuffs are all marked with the key letter before the serial number, except for the D cuff which has the "D", but no serial number.
The R key Version 1B is marked, but the E and G Version 1B cuffs are not. The E Version 2 has no mark.
This suggests that they tended to mark the restricted cuffs in the early days, but dropped the markings later in the run.

So if you don't mind please look at your #94 restricted key cuffs and see if they fit this pattern.
As far as I know the other three keys that were used are H, M and S.

Thanks

Joe

I am also looking for examples of the ones I don't have. H, M and S.

I have a pair of S&W model 94 version 2 "E" cuffs. I am not sure what serial number or other numbers are stamped into it.....all individual stampings are on the sides of the cuffs that are against my display board. The cuffs are bolted to the board and it is too much work to check them out right now. If I have the display and the tools to remove the cuffs out in the near future, I will remove them, check them out, and post the info on this thread. BTW, the key is stamped E at the top of the bow. I will browse through my computer to see if I have any other photos of these cuffs stored. If so, I will post them.

Does anyone know what agency was assigned the "E" cuff? I think this was brought up years ago but I don't remember being given an answer. I am really curious which agency used my cuffs.

My general knowledge on contemporary cuffs is very limited as I focus on antique cuff.

I only have three S&W 94 in my collection, one of each basic version. They are
keyed G (Ver. 1), the other two are the common N.

Not that I'm planning to collect key variations of Mod 94 but it would be interesting
to know many key variations there are for each cuff version?

I own these Restricted #94 cuffs: D-E-G-H-R (missing:L-M-S).

I have a factory set of #94 keys (D-E-G-H-L-M-N-R-S) (N=standard key)

_____________________________________________________________________________

Basic #94 Handcuff models:

Model 1 = identical cuffs; raised rivet pin.
Model 2 = "Left" & "Right" cuffs; raised rivet pin.
Model 3 = "Left" & "Right" cuffs, FLUSH rivet pin

(there are other small variations such as the "indents" on the cuffs, and a rumored blue-black finish...but the above 3 model descriptions will suffice).

No known Restricted models in Model 3.
____________________________________________________________________________

Here's what I can personally vouch for:

R cuff= 1st model; marked with "R" and Serial #.

D cuff= 1st model, no serial #. Marked with a "D" only.

D cuff = 2nd model; Serial # ONLY (no "D")

G cuff= 1st model; marked with "G" and Serial #.

H cuff= 1st model; marked with "H" and Serial #.

E cuff= 1st model; marked with "E" and Serial #.

E cuff= 2nd model; marked with "E" and Serial #.
___________________________________________________________________________

Many more variations must exist.

Bear in mind, that any law enforcement agency could have sent their standard ("N") #94s back to the factory - to be RE-KEYED to any of the restricted keyways...that was one of the sales benefits of the #94 handcuffs. That MAY explain why some restricted #94s have a serial number ONLY (no "letter" preceding it).

The #94 handcuff is a definite favorite of mine!

In regards to the "blue-black finish", I had a pair that was blued at one time but I believe it was done by a former owner to try to increase its value. The same home brushed-on bluing was used on other restraints that came from the same collection so its not hard to determine how the 94's got that way. The cuffs look old but it is the last remnants of the brushed-on bluing......you can clearly see the heavy bluing next to spots of clean metal on the sides of the cuffs (photo #3). This is a non-restricted set that is no longer in my collection (it went to a good home a couple of years ago). I have yet to see a factory original blue pair, hinged pair, belly chain, or leg iron.

Thanks Joe for great information!

I didn't know there was so many key variations. With three basic versions
and all key pattern, the #94's is a topic itself.

Newest addition to the S&W Model 94 collection.
I am trying to get at least 1 for each key section.
N’s, “G” and as of today, “E”
If anybody has a “D”,”H”,“L”,“M”,”R” or "S" for sale, please let me know.
I would like to have one of each.
I do not care if they are 1st, 2nd or 3rd models.

If law enforcement had regular N cuffs, they would not have been sent back to the factory to be 'rekeyed' as this would mean the deriveting of the lock for it to be removed and then the once a new lock (with restricted key) was installed, the whole cuff would have to be replated to cover the ground area over the rear of the new lock once peined. so the frame would have to be stripped of plating before being replated. Overall too expensive. Restricted cuff would have been made to order and letter stamping some and not other would have been an after thought about convenience.

I agree that specially keyed 94's were made as per order at the factory and previously existing N keyed cuffs were not re keyed. However, the lock cylinder itself is not plated.

I have a few S&W Model 94 Maximum Security Handcuffs in my collection.

In the standard "N" keys, I have a:
Version 1, serial number 604050, with N marked keys
Version 1, serial number 457470, with unmarked keys
Version 2, serial number 800877, with N marked keys
Version 3, serial number 197883, with N marked keys
Version 3, serial number 028542, with unmarked keys

In the Restricted "D" keys, I have:
Version 1, serial number D (no number), with D marked keys
Version 1, serial number D (no number), with D marked keys

In the Restricted "E" keys, I have:
Version 2, serial number E 279201, with E marked keys

In the Restricted "G" keys, I have:
Version 2, serial number G 446787, with G marked keys

In the Restricted "S" keys, I have:
Version 1, serial number S 5568292, with S marked keys

In Model 94 Special Order, I have, are a Version 2, right hand cuff only, with the S&W logo marked on the front, no markings on the rear.
The cuff is attached to a 30-1/2 inch chain with 8 rings on the end for adjustable locking positions. These were manufactured for S&W salesmen
and staff that traveled with samples of firearms in a case, and these chains could be used for additional security in locking their cases. Depending on the size of the case, one or more of these chains could be locked together, and then cinched tightly buying using the eight adjustable rings.

Thanks for the description and the pics, Dave! I had seen the single cuff 94 with the end rings and was not sure what their use/purpose was? Now, I can see how they were meant to be used. Very interesting piece. I also have common "N" keys in version 1,2 and 3. And a restricted "D" key in a model 1. I have the Gen 3 "N" key belly chains too. That is all I have been able to track down for the model 94, so far.

In checking off my list, I am getting closer to reaching my goal of obtaining at least 1 variation of M-94 cuff for each key letter.
The "D" added a year or so ago and this week, the "R".

I see that Joe Fox had the same 2 cuffs for sale but I missed them and had to add these later on in time.
The "R" cuff is unusual as the security indent is very much there but it is not visible from outside the lock case.
I've not seen this before.  All my others appear to be punched in.  Maybe this pair had them machined?

Still looking for ”H”,“L”,“M” or "S"!  Please let me know if you have or happen to know of any.  Thank You!

I have 3 Model 94 examples I found in my collection that the “security indent” is not visible from the outside of the lock case.
Version 1 Standard N key serial number 457470
Version 1 Restricted “G” key serial number G 446787
Version 1 Restricted “S” key serial number S 568292
I will have to check all my other S&W models to see if I can find others. I don’t have an answer right now why this occurs.

Hi -

The rule of thumb seems to be that Most, But Not All - of the First Models had No visible external "Indents" visible.
(as seen by Mark's photo of the First Model "D" and "R" cuffs, side-by-side).

My guess is that during the production-run of the First Models...S&W started to transition to a cost-cutting measure, by going from "machine made" Indents....to "punched in" Indents.

Thus, only the later First Models had the VISIBLE Indents...as did all of the Model 2s and Model 3s.

Happy to announce that I shall be receiving a nice Model 94 type 1 "S" keyed cuff in next week. Sadly, it has no key.

I have a full set of original lettered keys and key variations on a ring, but I would like to get an "S" key to put in the box with the cuff.

By some stroke of luck, would anyone have an "S" key they are willing to part with?

If so, I would love to hear from you!

Now, I just need an "H" "L" and "M" to complete my set.

Anyone with an extra "H" or "M" key?
By filing down a notch on the "H" or "M" key, I can turn it down into an "S".

In the alternative, I have a nicely made "N" aftermarket key (made in the Western Hemisphere by a NICE guy) and the tip of the barrel portion of the key can be ground down to create a key blank.  This is necessary because the existing notch at the 11:00 position will allow the pin in the lock to pop up too far and block the cylinder from turning.
The orange line in the picture shows how far to grind the tip to create a blank key.
I can start fresh and cut 3 new notches as the barrel part is still long enough to enter the lock all the way.

In this case, I can take my file and lower the notch at 5:00 at an angle so not to lower the notch at 11:00 and file across the barrel at 7:00 to 1:00 with nice even strokes for a clean look.

Hope this helps anyone when keys are too hard to obtain.

It works!

I had to drill down the barrel to allow it to fit all the way.

A little shorter than the original, but locks and doublelocks!

I fine tuned it and now it worked slightly better than the original.

Dave,
Thank you for the correction.
You posted this chart in an earlier Handcuffs.org posting on the subject and I referenced this to you due to that fact.
I don't believe you referenced it to any source, so I thought it originated with you and your fine research.
The Roper chart does not indicate the letter/bitting designation, which is present on the chart we shared, which makes Roper's a bit less useful.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

“The Roper chart does not indicate the letter/bitting designation, which is present on the chart we shared, which makes Roper's a bit less useful.”

This chart I believe was done for a schematic showing dimensions if someone wanted to make a key. He did not mention key letter designations but that there were 16 possible cuts for keys. I think I labeled the 9 known keys correctly in the attached photo.

Joe, I am still looking for H, L, M, R.
I have a complete set of keys from the factory.

"H"," "L", &  "M" is all that I need.
It was either the H or L that sold for over $500 on eBay last year.

I don't think I have ever seen any of the above in person or even know anyone with an "M".

What I would really like to know is what agencies used each of the lettered cuffs.
Did FBI use "S" while Seret Service use "M"......etc?
Could several agencies use the same letter or were they only used for a specific agency?
We know that the very common "N" was sold at many police equipment/uniform stores and any small PD could have used them.

I have two sets of "L" keyed cuffs that are joined together like a gang chain. But, they and the chain is all gold plated. It was assembled by S&W and  given as a retirement gift to police lieutenant in the Army Special Forces.
