Dennis, I agree.

Mind you, the problem with a lot of the old woodcut illustrations is that they are not accurate and some are purely fiction.

The best clues as to how these devices were really used within the framework of Medieval justice only comes about through studying actual legal papers from those times.

Although there is a bibliography in my book of other books on the same subject, the problem with most of these books is that the authors who wrote them repeated numerous false statements or information they found in other books they used when they conducted research.

A good case in point is the torture device knows as "The Mouth Pear."

Through a great deal of imagination and outright fiction this device suddenly became "The Pear of Anguish" that was used vaginally and rectally.

Utter B.S. but you have no idea how often it has been reprinted and circulated as fact.

In Gemany, where the device originated, it is called a "Mund Birne."

This translates to "Mouth Pear."

It is called by this name in old German justice texts.

It is also sometimes called a "Torture Bulb."

Interesting subject which raises more questions than it answers. On one hand, you say the Germans created this device and wonder which time frame. Now as a teenager, back in the 70's, my German cousin took me to a Roman museum in Mainz and I actually saw one of those pears. However, that was so long ago, I don't know what age they put on the pear. Some questions that come to mind is that does this item date back to the Roman period and did they just use it orally, or did they use it in other orifices. When Christianity took hold in the Roman Empire, morals changed. Going from Pagan, which was wild and brutal by christian standards. Since there doesn't seem to be evidence that in the German period, that they used it on other orifices, was it a different standard and that they didn't do certain things to the sexual organs.

I am not going to get into a prolonged sparring match about the pear here but I will say that just because you saw one in a museum in Rome does not in any way imply the device dates to the Roman period or that the Romans used it.

Mouth Pears appear in numerous museums around the world but that does not mean the things were actually used in any of those regions.

That is like saying that because I have on in my collection the pear was used here in Canada, which it was not.

With the Romans, there are fortunately written records from that period which detail the various tortures and painful punishments that were used under the law and mention of the pear appears in no such records.

Whipping, the application of hot irons, raking the flesh with currycombs, racking, and various forms of crucificition seem to be by and large the most popular forms of Roman tortures.

The only sexual kinds of tortures that appear in Roman times seem to be mostly related to the mutilation of female breasts and this was usually linked to the punishment of early Christians. Male genitals were also mutilated and removed in the arena but no mention of the pear or anything like it ever appears.

The majority of European pears I have seen are fakes and have the petals made from cast brass or bronze.

The originals were made from hand forged iron. Further, the originals are of such a size that were they to be used vaginally, there would be very little in the way of torture as they simply do not expand large enough to cause any measurable degree of pain (compared to say the crowning head of a baby about to be born).

In my book I outline that the mouth pear may not have been a bonafide torture instrument but was instead very likely a punishment for a specific misdeed.

Once again, it will be in the book.

I'm not trying to spar with you, just what I consider some thoughtful questions. It was over 35 years ago when I went to this museum in Mainz, W. Germany at the time. Between not being proficient in the language there, and how one's memory fades at bit. Also, as you know, in your travels museums don't always get there information correct on a item. Another thought is this, was this also one of the items used during inquisitions, Spanish or others.

Is notorious for the posting of misinformation.

Once again, there are no actual medieval justice documents of the period that make any mention of the infamous pear as having been used in, let alone invented, in France.

There are however numerous German sources.

I noticed in the Wikipedia link you offered up it is also mentioned that the pear was used by robbers in Holland to silence thier victims.

What rubbish!

How many robbers of the period would go to the trouble to invent or use such a device? A club to the head would have worked far better. And, more importantly, what "robber" would spend the money to have it made??? I always assumed robbers robbed people because they were in need of money. lol.

In closing, I stand by my conclusion that the dreaded pear is Germanic in origin.

Further, I know for a fact that the device WAS used within the German medieval justice system. In fact, one is going under the action hammer next month in Germany and it bears a turning handle crafted to look like a spoked cart wheel.

This wheel symbol is very telling as it was one of the ancient German symbols of justice and it was also the symbol of the executioner.

Until I see an authentic French example, of which to date I have seen none, or I see a record of the device being used in medieval French legal papers, I will stick with what I know and what is proven.

Just saw an old episode of the TV show BONES. The story line was about a stolen sword and subsequent murder. They displayed and tested a pair on a skull and spoke of its three body part uses in history.(it was TV so it must be true) I wonder where the prop is now, it worked.

I must admit that after it went into publication I noticed that there is the odd spelling and grammarical snafu that managed to slip by my editor and myself.

From long and painful experience I have learned that after extensive editing and proofreading, as soon as the book comes off the press, a copy will fall to the floor and open to a random page. Your eye will immediately fall on a typo.

It never fails.

Well, my copy was lying on my desk when I got home last night.

I did a quick thumb-through before dinner, and must say I'm pleased. Most exhibit entries consist of a large photo and a page or two of description, but the book is not limited to being a catalog of grisly artifacts. There is discussion of tyhe Medieval justice system and other ancillary topics. If the rest holds up as well as the skim did, I'll be pleased indeed.

Is this up on Amazon or B&N yet? I'll write some good reviews once it is.

Um . . . never minding the fact that these are your own creations, not actual, historical torture devices . . . wouldn't it be a good idea to BE ABLE PROPERLY TO SPELL BASIC WORDS, such as "SEPARATE"? It is a f*cking disgrace to see that a putative "trade paperback" misspells words known to any fifth-grader who learned, "I caught A RAT in sepARATe." You should be ashamed of yourself!
