Tens of thousands of (stamped) Colt's handcuffs made by Guardian or some other el-cheapo manufacturer for Colt in the 1970s (or perhaps made in Italy like their "genuine Colt's" black powder reproduction revolvers were), and now each one sells on eBay for around $250, or so.

A very rare (does anyone have another one like it?) vintage Peerless handcuff manufactured in Feb 1945 (meaning "pre-64 Winchester-like" quality) and (contemporaneously) hand engraved for presentation to a Harrisburg, PA, (presumably) high-ranking police officer or some very lucky police officer with generous friends/relatives retiring in 1945, now sells for $625.

Today it would cost at least $600 for "A" hand engraving and $1200 for "B" hand engraving on a pistol, so a pair of Peerless handcuffs fully engraved like the Harrisburg, PA, model would cost perhaps $700-$800. And then you would have a modern 2011 "collectible", not a vintage 1945 collectible.

Seems obvious to me which cuffs are overpriced, and which handcuff probably has at least a couple of bidders wishing they would have bid maybe just a little bit higher, especially if one of them ever paid $250 for a Colt!

I do not think the Colt handcuffs were made by as shoddy a firm as the people who made the Guardian cuffs.

The tollerances are just too good and tight compared to the Guardian crap.

I am speaking here as both a restraint collector and an escape artist. A simple shim test on Guardian VS. Colt will prove out what I am talking about.

The Colt cuffs, particulalrly the side key models, have very tight tollerances as compared to even Peerless.

The above said, and the fact that Colt cuffs are nice, I still fail to understand why they continually fetch such outlandish prices.

To my way of thinking $50 and upwards to perhaps $75 should be a cap for them.

The Colt handcuffs are reputed to have actually been made by Colt, unlike the Winchester cuffs, which were made in China.

I know that the older Peerless cuffs used coil springs and had a much stiffer action, but did they also have thicker nickel plating than latter examples?
