If I ever wanted to compete with Joe, I would call my website: Handcufffs.org.

I would expect a handcuff hustler to be in some hole in the wall schlock shop in NY City or in El Segundo. Not in Nantucket!
I guess crooks will ply their trade wherever thay can make a fast buck.

I know, we could ask Murray if these are real.
As he stated, "Houdini had every key to every lock in the world".
If these are REAL 17th century leg irons, then Houdini would have found a key to these on his 102-105 numbered key ring.
If a key was found for these "antiques", then the seller is honorable. If not, then he is a crook and probably breaks into Nantucket lumberyards at night prying out long nails from wooden crates.

I wrote to this guy just ONCE and told him to reconsider telling embellished stories of seafaring captains putting irons on his deckhands when they rise up and have a mutiny abord and othe stories.
I told him that his customers would appreciate a dealer in antiquities with high moral ground. Here is his reply to my one and only question:

Dear cuffs,

Please do not bother me anymore. I have been an antiques dealer for over 37 years and Rafael Osona holds over 5 world records at his auction house. I think between us we are capable of knowing antique from old. explain how these were on the inventory of the coffin home from over 100 years ago when I purchased them over 20 years ago.....If you don't want them move on. My reputation is fine.

I bought my pair which look exactly like these back in the late 1970's. So anyone telling this guy they were made last year is wrong and he now has about ten people to prove his story is better than theirs as they are ALSO wrong.

Dear Ian,

Your message is correct. I gave the seller the time-frame of the last quarter of the 20th Century and India or Pakistan being the likeliest countries of origin. I accused him of nothing (except, in a friendly way, of using incorrect spelling, grammar and punctuation), instead suggesting he might be interested in knowing his description had errors in it.

Incidentally, leg irons are far too kind for whalers, drunken or sober.

Ian,
I too told the seller that the cuffs he was offering was most likely manufactured during the last quarter of the 20th Century from India or Pakistan.
He asked how it was possible that these were found in the coffin house, whatever that is. I elected to grant his request and don't "bother" him again, even though he asked me a direct question that warrants a reply.

I truly believe he is a crotchety old man who can't learn anything new. Maybe he really believes what he was told at the auction from where he purchased these.
In any event, he is trying to sell these junk cuffs as authentic historical irons and for the time being, no one will be spending good money on rubbish.

"5 world records at his auction house".....I wonder what kind of records he broke. Did he ever break Madoff's record?
Seriously, it looks like this Raphael Osona runs a nice action with offerings of scrimshaw, friendship baskets, embroidered artwork and paintings. Some beautiful things go through his auction house.
Is it possible that this eBay seller bought these leg irons from the auction?
I would like to think not, but it is possible for an auctioneer to be fooled and this is not a perfect world.
I would hope an auction house would have taken the time to research the items they are offering, but 10 or more years ago, resources were much more scarce.
Six years ago, the Radner auction had some problems with authenticity and as previously discussed in another blog, it is possible that a large quantity of the items sold never had been handled or owned by the world's most famous magician.
After reviewing the quality of the Osona auctions, and reading the eBay sellers replies, I would speculate that the eBayer is the handcuff huckster here.

It makes me cringe when I see some poor unsuspecting soul lay down a large sum of money on a historical cuff only to learn that it is a common reproduction.
I used to warn potential eBay customers back in the day when you could see and contact them and wrote my fraud guide to direct them into buying wisely.
I get many emails from buyers and most write AFTER they got ripped-off, but I have saved quite a few from making a costly mistake.
It is self-satisfying emulating David Horowitz, the consumer advocacy leader, and doing my handcuff version of FighBack.

At antique shows, I have noticed that a lot of the dealers have general stuff at their tables, but they themselves specialize in their favorite thing. With time they have to get better at recognizing repros and counterfeit material, but pride plays a part of it. Would an established dealer want to admit they got taken? The last cuff I purchased was an English unmarked darby for what I think the market would bear, also on the table was an modern repro which was priced the same. I explained the difference to the dealer, who was polite about the whole thing....but didn't lower the price of the repro. Will the next person at the table be told its a repro or not?

Hello,

The man seems honest and legitimate. Restraints collectors must keep in mind the dearth of resources and reliable reference material compared with other collecting fields. The ratio literally can be hundreds or even thousands to one. I also suspect the leg irons were sold with a small or with no reserve, sold because they were with other, recognised and widely desirable, items. In other words, I doubt this auction house would have sought this restraint as it would a painting, a lamp, a tea service or jewellery.

From the map of Nantucket on Osona's site, there is a Coffin Street. Perhaps the "coffin home" to which the seller refers was or is an house on that street.

I saw a pair of horse hobbles identical to these when I was in Salem, Mass. last year. The guy claimed they were recovered from the Old Salem Witch Dungeon that was unearthed by accident in the 1950's. I told him what they were and where they more likely from and he got that "hmmmmm" look on his face. He then asked me to make him an offer.......I declined. He asked me again with a little more conviction, "Come on, MAKE ME AN OFFER!" I said that I wouldn't offer him the $15.00 that they may in fact be worth, I wouldn't even offer him $5.00, I plain and simply didn't want them. I suspect that when I walked back through his store to get back to my car he was waiting for me to throw a low ball offer at him but I just said, "Have a nice day". I hope that alone sent a message.

I believe this rip-off company knows they are selling garbage to the world as their rent must be very expensive.
They advertise this junk cuff as being legitimate but state that they are "definitely old style".
This line is the ONLY factual statement in their description and is designed to allow them to weasel themselves into claiming they disclosed some truth about them. How they can defend their position that they are dated from the 1700's lends credence to their willingness to deceive their own customers. A whale of a tale!

I recommend visiting Nantucket as it is a beautiful tourist mecca, but avoid the Manor House Antique Co-operative at all costs. A purchase from them could spoil your vacation.

Years ago I met a guy who bought a crate of these wonderful irons form India. It was in the 1970's and his cost was 25 cents each.

Nice mark up and the early quality was a bit better.
