I happen to know this seller and that he is French and buys many restraints from France.

Some time ago he had for sale 2 leg irons which took a basically identical screw key.

He also offered once a VERY heavy and massive manacle that was obviously much older than these but had the same basic shape.

Because of the above, and the strong resemblance this manacle bears to many "Berliner" style cuffs, I am of the opinion that it probably has European origins.

I keep looking at the pictures and there is something familiar about the construction that keeps nagging away in the back of my brain. I have seen this used elsewhere but can't put my finger on it. It is stamped and formed by the marks left on it. Like I have seen this used maybe for supporting piping of sorts... Dunno....

Hi. Well, I just couldn't resist owning this one so I am sorry to those that I outbid. I will be supplying a picture of the two other circle cuffs in my collection that have some similarities to this one. The first one is very heavy and beautifully machined. I named it the "Super Cuff" after someone in this forum asked "What was that super cuff on eBay?" By the craftsmanship on this piece, I would have to guess that it is German in origin. It uses a similar screw in the top to secure the two halves. It is probably the heaviest cuff in my collection. The second cuff utilizes a padlock to secure it. It is not machined nearly as well as the other circle cuffs, but I find all three of these to be very interesting additions to my collection.

Hello fellow collectors,

I do not believe that Mark's first handcuff or the handcuff from the start of this thread are of German origin. I have never seen German restraints with a simple screw mechanism (I am not speaking of spring loaded screw bolts). But I have seen several French restraints with such screw locks like the handcuffs and leg irons (manufacturer unknown) and the Rivolier leg irons of the 1980s shown below.
