#1I have recently come across a pair of Hiatt
darbies which have several features tending
to make me think they may be early examples.
They much resemble the pair of 'Aston Cantlow'
Griffin & Nichols cuffs acquired by Dr Lauher
in 2007, and illustrated on this forum. Like
those, they have four chain links between them
but these are much larger than the four links
on Hiatt's 'Superintendent' cuffs. Most notably,
the end caps are domed, not flattened. Each is
fastened by three small rivets around its base,
and the domed upper surface of each cap bears a
simple engraved wreath. I wondered if this type
of wreath could be the inspiration for the circle
of stamped 'Y-like' marks usually found on the end
caps on (later ?) Hiatt darbies.
Will try to borrow the cuffs in question and post
a picture.
Until then, I'd be interested in peoples' thoughts.
