Hi Mark, don't take it so personally. Everyday I see McDonald's ad's on TV and crap for exercise and kitchen products they no-one needs. We live in a world of stupid people. Some people give money to get prays for sick friends who still end up dying or not getting better. Peoeple love spending and feeling good, let em go far it. What's the matter? Only ONE key? Did "Master" forget to burry the other key? Ohhhhhhh - That's right, one locktube - so only one key.
Since eletrowelding was in fashion in the mid 1800's it's a shame someone could'nt fabricate a split-ring keychain to keep both keys together - Tisk Tisk

Now if someone affixes a brass "owner plate" to a pair of 700s, THEN I'll be more inclined to believe they were used on a plantation, pirate ship, spacecraft, or Egyption pyramid!

Hi guys...
I just picked up a set of cuffs much like these at an antique swap meet. They are the cuffs only,no leg irons.
They differ from the above pics in that the shackle (hinged) pieces have 2 grooves,the part that has they hinge on goes onto the cylinder as 2 separate pieces,& the end that is opposite of the key,(like a cap to the cylinder) doesn't have a strait seem ,but material wraps past & overlaps at an angle.The top of this cap piece has punch marks around the face of the seem peening it together. The key has the number 76 & so does one side of the hinged shackle piece.
It also smells exactly like my great great grandfathers gun I have inherited.(an old oil & steel kind of smell)
I was hoping to post the pics to show what i am referring to...Do I need do make a photobucket account?

If you look at the pics above,the piece that the hinges are set in is a flat one piece unit.
The auction house piece is constructed differently,2 pieces that overlap.

Over the years eBay has been flooded with reproduction handcuffs, slave badges and other slave and Civil War items. The vast majority are modern reproductions being represented as original. I know of no handcuffs that were ever labeled with a tag describing its use either slave, prison or civil war.

There are only a few slave tags or badges known to exist and they are well documented and cataloged. Heritage Auctions had an auction on May 18, 2015 in which there were five slave badges for sale along with many other items. They were from the Isaac Rudman Collection. If you are interested here is the link to the auction results with great pictures and descriptions of these real badges.

Several years ago, I wrote a guide for eBay about collecting cuffs and more importantly, how to spot fakes.
I have not updated it in some time so all the pictured fizzled away.
The cuff you have is more recent and was never included in the original guide.
The brass tag is the give-away. I think I mentioned that these tags were probably more expensive to make that the cuff, so economically, these cuffs don't make any sense.

If you see a cuff that you are considering, please snap a pic and post it here. You will most likely get advice as to its rarity and price. Be patient sometimes these don't get answered for a day or two.

Im only out $30,not to bad I guess. They really did a nice job in the construction of these. Any Idea when they started production...& why they would change the method(hinge area ,rolling the top cap,E.T.C.?)
Im a machinist,& can appreciate the work that went into these....but can't figure out why they would change their method.

Ignoring all the nationalistic posturing, whether pro or con...

These repro manacles may be junk in the collecting sense, but can make useful additions to escapologist's restraint displays, and as escape props (properly sealed to keep from getting rust on everything).

They also serve as cheap, usable props for stage and film use.

I have no problem with the selling of reproduction cuffs or any other collectables when they are described correctly as a reproduction at a reasonable price. The problem is when they are described as antique, original, and at a very high price. Yes, I know the old saying, "buyer beware", but most of the sellers know they are not original and buyers are being ripped off. Learn something about what you are buying and collecting. Most of us have learned this the hard way.
