Hi, it seems that the S&W 100 is discontinued, replaced with the inferior riveted model 100-1. Does anyone know a reliable wholesale source for the model 100 (welded contruction not riveted)

Some ebay auctions and suppliers are still advertising current items as model 100 but when I open the parcels, it's 100-1 and it's not worth the money to return them.

Don't you love it when ebayers don't update their pictures? I've got a completely different cuff several times. Sometimes it's a better one and sometimes not.

Can you explain the complete difference? I knew the rivets were exposed but I didn't know they were lacking anything.

Hi Tim, the riveted model S&W100-1 has sharped edged rivets ( which I only guess would wear handcuff cases and can be disconcerting when handled)
The rivets are small in diameter to their holes in the case and though I haven't tried it (yet?) I think a hard nock might shunt the frame and case and cause some problems, first that comes to mind is the misalignment of the keyhole and maybe the bow touching the centre plate.

It's not as impressive as the earlier model.

You are right that some traders don't update their web or auction photos, I see this a both lazy and misleading.

Are you a collector or in law enforcement?

regards

I assume that was one of the sellers that I pointed out to you Ian. Sorry about that. In hind sight, It pays to ask if they have exposed rivets or not.

Don't know if this will be of much help, but I recently ordered a pair of 100P's (push pin model) directly from Smith & Wesson, and they are the old style, non-riveted cheek plate type.

Perhaps you'll still have some luck finding the push pin model non-riveted. Besides, the push pin model is more desirable anyhow in my opinion.

Hi Paul, no it was a very well known seller whom I incorrectly thought would have treated me better.
I never thought to ask as I believe that 100 is not 100-1 and vica versa. If 100 is is not available, how hard is it to say but the new age method seems to be get the money first, answer questions later.

Jimbo, I don't respond to anyone I believe is anon is under a false name ( we are all big boys here )

Thank you to the MAN! who has contacted me directly.

Ian,

I'm a casual collector of modern cuffs. I did take an examination for a local police department a few years ago and scored great both on the written and physical but unfortunately or fortunately however you look at it, I make about twice what a police officer makes; at least in my area.

Well, I guess S&W is another company that is focusing on cheapening the techniques rather than quality.

I see all this as helping the Gotcha cuffs in a big way.

Well, it's the same old story...

S&W can sell Police Force ABC 100 cuffs for $0.50 less per unit than Peerless can. Police Force ABC will buy 100 units S&W. They may say raised rivets increase strength, but I question how many old style 100's actually had a problem with being pried completely apart. If anything is going to be popped apart, it's going to be be the single strand rivet, I would assume. Nothing but a cost cutting measure.

However, on the bright side, if everything stayed exactly the same, nothing would be worth collecting.

Hi Tim, thanks for the info. I hope you have a pair of the model 400 Peerless cuff (one of my favourite modern handcuffs) They look great but thats about all. A shame but they were worth the effort to make a good looking modern collectable.
I am only guessing the new riveted S&W 100-1 is cheaper but with plating, there is now three times as many parts to handle than before. Assembly must be a trick, getting the pawl in place over the semi pierced studs on which it pivots. Two of the cuffs I recently got have had one on each side of the frame broken off, so the pawl is hung by one tiny piece. I am sure that is the cuff is forced close while on deadlock, the piece might give.
It looks like money before pride again.

Jimbo, this is one of my questions as well. Why did S&W feel that this change was necessary? If it simply is one of cost reduction then, ok, many companies look for ways to reduce expenses. However, has anyone here ever heard that S&W cuffs were vulnerable to being pried apart?

Hi LK, thank you, I have also found lots of websites which sell handcuffs.

What I was hoping someone might be able to help with me is,

The name of a company, from which you? (anyone out there) has actually bought S&W 100 cuffs Nickel from, which were exactly that, both in description, photo and model number. A company you ( and I ) could trust and as an added extra, that you might know if this company would export to Australia.

I have already wasted some good money on buying 5 pair of cuffs that are not what I asked for and all the seller said was,"Well they don't make them anymore" Would have been nice to tell me that before taking my money.

"Discount" on information as well I guess.........

So I just looked at some pics online and these rivets and construction are different from the "exposed rivets" that have been on the model 103 and 104 all along. Is this correct?

Did those models have the rivets AND the welding?

Hi Ian, i have a few pairs of older model 100's i would part with including a pats pending in original packaging and box. one pair in blued finish also. (not pats pending). As i live in Canada there is no problem with posting these to Australia as far as i know. However i think i read somewhere that certain provences/territories do not allow private ownership of handcuffs, is this true?. Chris.
