Question about early model 100's

How long did smith & wesson make the pats pending cuff with a double lock slot on one side only?

Possibly from 1981-1983. I use the end date of 1983 because I know that a double-sided slot lock was available on a Model 100 produced during the time that Lear Siegler Corp. had control over S&W (they bought Bangor Punta Corp. in Jan 1984). The starting date is a little harder to discern and maybe somebody with product brochures from 1980 and 1981 could be more precise. I do know that patent # 4,287,731 (for the Model 100) was granted to James B. Kruger for Bangor Punta on Sept. 8, 1981. A Smith & Wesson Parts List from 1982 includes the Model 100. Is it reasonable then to suggest that a Pat Pending model would have been produced before Sept. 1981? I have neither read nor heard the suggestion that the Model 100 was in production as early as 1979. A product brochure from 1977 still lists the Model 90.

I do know that the very first ones came in a model 90 box because I have a mint pair. Neat cuffs.

I would say they are a hard to find item if you mean the cuffs AND their original packaging. The cuffs alone I would think much(?)less so, but I could be corrected on this.

I just got mine in the mail and i have to say i like them alot. I'm impressed with how stiff the springs are. I have an older pair of m100 that have really worn n springs and i figured these would be the same but they are not. yay im happy

I am missing product brochures from 1978 thru 1983, but I think the first marked model 100's came out in 1979. Smith & Wessen opened their new facility at Houlton, Maine in 1966 manufacturing simi-auto rimfire pistols. It wasn,t until 1979 when S&W manufactured its first pair of handcuffs at this facility. All of the marked Model 100 handcuffs that I have are marked:
M-100
MADE IN U.S.A.
MARCAS REGISTRADAS
SMITH & WESSON
HOULTON, ME.

All the Model 100's(none stamped, Model 100) PAT'S PENDING marked that I have are are marked:
MADE IN U.S.A.
MARCAS REGISTRADAS
SMITH & WESSON
SPRINGFIELD, MASS.

This leads me to believe all model 100, PAT'S PENDING marked, where manufactured prior to the 1979 production started in Houlton, ME. Just my theroy. I'm interested to find out if anyone has a Pat's Pending model marked with the Houlton, ME. address.

I have a pats pending 100 marked houlton, me I believe they are alot rarer than a pats pending springfield mass

I will have to be on the look for Houlton, ME. Pat's Pend. model 100's now. The only marked Patent Pending Houlton,ME. cuffs I have are, a model 210 hinged cuffs and a model 1900 leg irons. I am always on the hunt for Pat. Pend. cuffs.

I didn't know that there was a Houlton, ME Pat. Pend. model. Wow, I will be on the lookout for one too. Come to think of it, I need to check mine to see if it is Springfield, Mass or Houlton, ME. Thanks for the heads up.

David, what evidence do you have that the Houlton, ME plant was producing handcuffs in 1979? I'm not saying that you are wrong, but just curious as to your source on this.

I have spoken to individuals, Roy Jinks & others at the plant and Ginger Chandler, the head of new products. Also ther was an artical on line in 2009 (I think), The Tactical Wire talking about the six millionth pair of handcuffs manufactured at that facility.

I have a copy of this press release from March 18, 2009. It does indicate that production started in 1979. I guess my confusion came from another official press release dated October 5, 2006 which states, "Since starting production of handcuffs in Houlton, ME in 1982, the Smith & Wesson facility has produced over 5,000,000 handcuffs for use by law enforcement agencies and military personnel around the world." I've always thought the 1982 date more likely given that I'd not seen a Model 90 stamped from Houlton and because I thought the Model 100 began production in the early 80's. I think Stan posted here that the Model 100's first appeared in his area in the summer of 1983 and that in the east they may have appeared a little earlier. Also James Kruger didn't even file for what would become patent #4,287,731 until Dec 7, 1979 (which may not really mean anything in terms of actual production). Of course, now that someone has a 'Pat Pending' Model 100 from Houlton (might that person post a picture of it here?) then perhaps the 1979 date does seem more certain.

I have a pair of S&W leg irons with those markings. Tim Boyd on FB.

Here are some pics of the patent pending model. These aren't marked from Houlton, ME though. I've only seen them marked Springfield Mass. I'd like to see one marked Houlton, ME. if anyone can post them.
