having searched the forum i don't see much talked about on just NICHOLS DARBY'S ,not griffin & nichols darby but a set marked just NICHOLS & # 13 on one cuff, and just warrented marked on the other, thay are not backstrap, just plain darby's by the time line they would fall into the 1820-1840 range?
does anyone else have a simialer set or have any other info about NICHOLS?

Can you post a picture of them and the Nichols mark?
All of mine are marked J NICHOLS, so it could be a different maker or made after John's death.
Just a thought.

I have quite a few different Nichols cuffs with different marks. The most common just says Nichols in small print. There are too versions, one with the name straight in a line and one with the name or logo curved. A couple of the curved logos say J. Nichols instead of just Nichols.

I also have two examples of cuffs that say NICHOLS in large block letters. I have seen a couple of others on eBay. I do not think these cuffs are old enough to have actually been made my Nichols. A possible theory is that they were made my Longmore, the company that bought out Nichols. Only a few cuffs marked Longmore are known. It is possible that they made cuffs using the Nichols brand name later in the 19th century.

The 3 I have all have the curved or arched name J NICHOLS in very small type. Without my glasses they'd be hard to notice. The J is harder to read on some being at the end of the logo on a curved surface. I think it is the same problem as the Hiat with one T or 2. Sometimes they are stamped properly and sometimes they do not. That's not to say that there are not stampings of just NICHOLS. I prefer to collect the curved logo with the J and in very small type.

so JOE ,what u r saying then is the one's stamped in small letters and stright lined is what is believed to be NICHOLS made ?
the size of my lettering " NICHOLS" is just slightly larger then the lettering size of the "THOMPSON" ON A SET OF thompsons and the word warranted is just slightly larger then the word NICHOLS!
they are deep stamped and i don't think any other marking are/were worn off, don't think there was ever a stamping like wrought, just warranted!

am working this weekend but will try to figure out photo bucket an post pic's next week

The one you describe should be Nichols made. The larger print is quite a bit bigger with about 3mm high lettering.

Hi I am just wondering if you found out any more on your handcuffs. I also have a set marked J Nichols on one cuff and the number 13 on the other.. I can't seem to get any real info on when they were in production or what they would be worth so just wondering how you have gone and if you have any more information on them. Cheers Liz

Hi LIZ,no i have not found out anymore about them as of yet, mine have the # 13 on same side as the small word NICHOLS and warrented on the other cuff alll wording is on the hindge side of the bows would love to see some pics of yours, also some of PAUL'S!

This pic shows 4 different cuffs with 2x Nichols and 2x J Nichols stamps. It could be that the J did not work on 2 of the stampings.

This is typical of all 4 cuffs that I have.
They seem to be fairly common cuffs, appearing every 3 to 6 months on eBay.

Liz did not respond to my email about her cuff, but it is probably similar and worth about the same as a Froggatt, Thompson or a Dowler.
