Gaffed Bean Cobb

The gaffed Bean Cobb that allows for fast escape without a key has been around for a long time. The Thayer Magic company sold a lot of them, but, I think Houdini was selling them before that.
Does anyone know--I don't want to reveal the method, Ian McColl has made an improved version--when this gaff first showed up?
