I was looking at some USMC photos taken in Iraq during December 2008 and found these ...

I was able to puzzle out that the cuffs are stamped

I've known of the Tru Spec brand for military / law enforcement apparel but did not know it is also a handcuff brand.

If you Google / Shopping "tru spec handcuffs" you can find a bunch of sellers of these cuffs at prices ranging from $12. to $38. (!).

I recently bought a pair from www.opsgear.com.

These are actually made by Kyung Chang Industry Co. (Korea). These are well made, have 3 ratchet paws, etc. They appear to be the same as what Discount Handcuff Warehouse sells (but are mostly out of stock of).

UNFORTUNATELY ... The cuffs currently being distributed by www.atlanco.com no longer have the Tru Spec stamp on them; instead they are stamped Handcuffs / Kyung Chang. Which makes a world of difference for the collector!

These Korean cuffs come in 2-bitt key and 3-bitt key models...which make them deceivably more secure than their inexpensive appearance would have you believe (a standard cuff key will not open them).

I would also assume that their 2 or 3 "ratchet pawls" would make shimming more difficult. Certainly, "picking" them is harder - as you'd have to raise each pawl independently, or all at one time.

Inexpensive enough for the military to buy in mass quantities, than say, Hiatt, S&W or Peerless.

They don't sell well, because I can move name-brand and even NIJ cuffs for the same price.

They were probably bought by the soldier.

I can't really say I'm a big fan of KC; something feels cheap about them, even though they may be technically sound.

The only issue I have w the KC aluminum cuffs is that the colored anodized pairs I bought years ago were packaged with nothing too keep the bare rivets from rubbing against the anodized surface and leaving rub marks . I questioned the USA vendor about it and his reply was that he had made KC aware and that they did not seem concerned .

The cuffs I bought are steel. The finish and build quality seems comparable to S&W. IMO. What really impresses me is that the double locks are really smooth to set. I've S&W that are something of a chore. What I don't like is that the connecting chain is a bit on the wimpy side. IMO.

I have the matching KC LIs. The irons are well made, but the connecting chain is a total joke. IMO. Imagine something about half the weight of Peerless. OTOH, compare the connecting chain on the Taiwan LI's I've got for sale. That's something serious! From one extreme to the other.

Adam ... You know, I was looking at an old pair of S&W made Peerless ... by any standard, these are still pretty well made ... and they look good too. IMO.

It bothers me a lot that so many LEOs are trusting there lives to cuffs of questionable quality. I guess for the manufacturers it comes down to selling a product that ppl will buy, but it seems penny wise / pound foolish for a LEO to trust his life to the cheapest cuffs around. IMO.

Been using HWC stainless steel cuffs for about 6 years now and they work fine. Many-a-big boy have been locked up in them and haven't gotten out yet! I have a crappy set of S&W that was issued to me when I was hired and I only use them as a back up because I hate that slide double lock.

Like i stated in other posts, everything is cheaper but the price tag.
