Dear Mark,

It's hard to choose where to begin in condemning this draconian, tyrannical fascism. Maybe the gross violations of the 1st, 5th, 8th, 13th and 14th amendments to the constitution are a good place to start.

Adults are supposed to protect, not abuse, minors. I shudder to think of what happens to kids who actually do something a sane person would regard as wrong.

Good grief, I haven't worn a belt in decades and don't even own one. Is that a flogging offence? Seriously, nothing, and I mean nothing, justifies treating kids this way. This is barbarism, plain and simple.

I avoided this post for quite a while.

At first my reaction was how horrible this was and I'm still 80% that way but after putting some thought into it, I'd have to know some more details before I decided how bad the punishment would be.

Why did this school even have handcuffs? What exactly is an "alternative school"? Is this a politically correct term? Are these future guests of the prison system simply given another 50 last chances?

My eyes were opened when my youngest son was in school and the whole class was basically terrorized by a "troubled" kindergartener that they were considering sending to an alternative school. An older student - perhaps high school age - that actually met the qualifications to get into one of these so-called alternative schools has to be pretty bad.

Were these kids basically one step from the penal system?

Just seems funny to me that this school had a ready supply of handcuffs if these were all harmless students.

If they were treating students this way for no reason, then yeah it's wrong. If they were placed there by a judge who was strongly considering sending them to prison or jail? Then that's a different story.

With all the bullying and sexual assaults going around in schools throughout the Ghetto... Id hate to be a student in that school. Someone might just take advantage of a bad situation. maybe thats what the school needs. A LAWSUIT! The only kinda suit I like.

For those of you who are not aware, the alternative schools are one last ditch effort for certain students who basically have "one foot in the prison system." They have been through suspensions, transfers, and every disciplinary action the school districts can enforce. From my experience, the ALCs are juvenile detention facilites for the school day. There is an alternative school two blocks from my house (I'm not thrilled at that), but here are some of the requirements:

No one is allowed to walk to school or arrive in personal vehicles....all students must ride the bus.
Students MUST conform to the dress code/uniform policy of the school
Students are NOT allowed to bring their lunches. They MUST eat in the cafeteria.
City Police Officers (not school security) patrol the hallways
The only time the students are allowed outside is when they are walking to and from the buildings and the busses.
The busses enter the school through an automated gate system and the school is surrounded by what looks to be about an eight foot high fence topped with a double strand of razor wire (last time I saw double strand of razor wire was the last jail I worked on)

So, I can understand why handcuffs are at the alternative school in the article. I'm not saying I agree with the handcuffing of the students or I disagree with it. I just understand why the handcuffs were there.

That's what I was talking about in my above post. They try to make these articles out to sound like in a normal suburban school, the teachers just took some kid who never bothers anyone and cuffs them to a chair or whatever.

Not saying it's right, but like the above post states, alternative schools are not normal schools. They are a detention center with a "politically correct" name.

I'd have to work there to judge it.

....the school in question is in Jackson, MS. Mississippi is....well, the only word to adequately describe it is....unique.....when compared to the rest of the country. BTW...I was born in Mississippi and lived there off and on, and actually worked in a MS school for two and a half years. I'd still be in MS had I not decided to go back to college.

I believe that one or two "rent a cops'

pull this kind of BS at a public school here in Ny and students parents came down HARD w/ law suits onto NYc school board

Than if this is a normal public school then a lawsuit should be filed. As a matter of fact "unlawful restraint" would be a very possible criminal charge.

If it's as Margarette says then it's a different story.
