Hudson has long been known as a manufacturer of handcuffs. They are most famous for making hinged swinging bow handcuff for August Schwarz. According to Alex Nichols they also made cuffs for Dowler and at times for Hiatt.

However, until now I had never seen a cuff marked with Hudson's own name. The cuff shown recently sold eBay. It is a standard Darby, one that looks very much like a standard Hiatt, but it is marked HUDSON and BIRM for Birmingham where Hudson was located. The BIRM mark is followed by a second smaller M with an underline. I don't know what this second underlined M means. (Manufactured?) The HUDSON and BIRM marks are on each cuff.

The top of each cuff has the normal WARRANTED WROUGHT and Hard marks. One cuff is also marked in large letters WRC for West Riding Constabulary.

Does anyone else have a pair of marked Hudson cuffs?

Dear Joe,

BIRMM corresponds to BIRMINGHAM. This is how both pairs of my Hiatt spurs are marked, and you know this mark.

A couple of thoughts.
If Hudson had a contract to supply cuffs to WRC you'd think there would be more of them around. I have a few Police whistles made by Hudson. I've only seen WRC cuffs in the lightweight Superintendent model made by Hiatt and Dowler. There must be standard darbys marked WRC as well - like this Hudson.
Does the WRC mark look as if it was done at the time of manufacture? The Chrome plating looks modern ie not nickel plating. Is it possible this a recycled/refurbished cuff that was marked WRC before replating. I have a few cuffs that seem to be refurbished in this way.
It is a nice cuff that I also bid on. A standard Dowler and a standard Hudson are on my wish list.

The WRC marks are pretty precise. I think they were likely put on when the cuff was manufactured. On the plating is thick and may be a refurbishing job and the WRC mark could have been added then.

Hello. I have a pair of Hudson marked cuffs although the marks are not as clear as the ones shown. I did actually bid on these but under-estimated what they would cost! They will be in Alex Nichol's next book (volume3). The small "m" at the end of Birm is the old abreviation for Birmingham.

Further to previous, sorry I repeated the bit about the small m as it has already been answered but to show I am still a smartarse the WRC stands for West Riding Constabulary which is a Yorkshire (England) force. I really should read all the replies before I wade in with my comments.

Sir I just become the owner of a Darby cuff stamped Hudson Birm  Warranted Wrought WRC. I was told by the seller that it is a rare cuff? I’m not sure if that’s correct but I’m happy to have it in my small but growing collection. Can you give me any more info on this cuff?

My Hudson  Birm Darby’s are marked Hudson Birm with and underlined M as well and Warranted Wrought cuff and key number also match. Ron J

Hudson were better known for brass products, especially Police whistles.
Hiatt were better known for their cuffs than their Police whistles and spurs, for example.
Craddock started out in brass horse products and later made handcuffs.
It has long been believed (by me) that whoever won a contract to supply a Police force, sourced other items from other local manufacturers and had their own name stamped on them. Therefor, Hudson cuffs were probably made by Hiatt etc and Hiatt whistles were made by Hudson etc.

Paul was Hudson actually J Hudson which was two brothers both with first names that started with J? If so that Hudson is now ACME one of the largest whistle markers in the world. For some reason I believe that it most likely was. Ron J
