Looking for a good present for DAD

Hello All,

I have been lurking for awhile. I am looking for a good present for Dad. He has collections of many odd things and he once mentioned that he would like to collect restraints. I would like to get him started. I have about $250 to spend and have been looking on Ebay lately.

I was wondering what the folks in the forum thought of these two auctions I came across:

I know he wouldn't be happy with anything that came without a key, wasn't in collectible condition, or wasn't all original.

The prices on the two auctions you posted are a bit high but both as listed as "working condition" and both have keys so I would consider them. Some people do not like the seller (he is one of our own here on the forum). I have bought many things from him at decent prices without incident.....he is a good guy in my book.

It is hard to shop on eBay even as an experienced cuff guy......so many pitfalls out there; you could end up buying a very expensive paper weight. Remember to think before you bid or hit the buy it now button.......the Devil is in the details! Make sure you look over the pics with a magnifying glass and make sure there is no important info missing in the description. People intentionally leave out small details that mask the fact that something is horribly wrong with the cuffs. They will also sell cuffs with no key to hide the fact that they don't work (no way to tell if they work or not if there is no key......"I swear I didn't know they were broken!!! Sorry, all sales are final! Ha Ha Ha!") Yes, these sellers exist.

This forum is a good place to look for cuffs. I sell a lot of stuff here and so does a number of other collectors. I do not think I have anything your Dad would be interested in right now or I would volunteer to sell you something. We (the cuff collectors) can tell you what issues the cuffs have before you buy them, unlike a lay person on eBay who usually is selling an item that was found in Grandpa's attic after he passed or found at a flea market in BFE for $5.00 and wants to flip it for quick cash. I am sure someone will come forward with something for sale either publicly on the forum or by private e-mail before too long.

Mike gives good advise.
Be aware that the 2 items you are viewing are probably not nickel plated any more, but bare metal recently polished that will rust again.
Having said that, it's not a bad place to start if you think they are worth it after looking at the prices of recent auctions.
I like to buy cuffs cheaply, without a key and take the risk. But with the closing of Cannons Great Escapes it will be harder to get keys.
For a Present you are doing everything right- key, research, advise.
I'd try and get a Marlin Daly for $250.

MICHAEL :: why don't you tell the readers the TRUTH -- here is the TRUTH -- MICHAEL sent me a deposit as he stated as he was to finish paying within ( don't remember exactly ) within a AGREED upon amount of time..... after the AGREED upon time - I HAD TO CONTACT HIM to ask why he has not finished paying for the item..... guess what -- he said that he didn't want it any longer & wanted a REFUND ... i told him - SORRY !! I DO NOT DO REFUNDS after a stated period of time....now you all know the WHOLE story.... joe

Now lets get the story straight...Never did i ask for a refund. and Never did I state that I wanted the item no longer.. ..I asked for more time to pay on an item (Not much ) but instead of giving a guy a break you kept my deposit ...you THIEF!!!

MICHAEL :: you can try to twist it anyway you want as it does not bother me, but lets just say that you are right (wrong) i gave you PLENTY of time to pay & you DID NOT... many of you know that i have done LAY A WAYS for years & that i ask YOU -- the buyer -- what & how YOU how you would like to pay etc etc ... for the most part YOU buyers have set the time frame & payment schedule & many of you know that IF something came up on YOUR END that prevented you sending a payment etc etc that I ALWYS let it slide & continue from there etc etc.... ---- i do NOT give refunds for BUYERS REMORSE or because buyer found the same item alittle cheaper elsewhere .... joe

Only once did I do a lay away with deposit with Tanner. We both held up our ends of the deal and the transaction was completed. Within the time agreed upon. Would not have entered into it if I felt I could not manage it. The original post was not about non refunded deposits or non continuation of payments.
