Okay, am I missing something? I don't see a hole in the socket head cap screw down where the threads are... I think more than likely that the cuffs were altered with a bigger screw as I seem to recall the screw was recessed in the originals. I would like to see more detailed pictures as those are pretty fuzzy from this side of the Atlantic Ocean.

I can well believe that these are genuine, that is to say that they are a legitimate factory item, and for two reasons. First, there is a long tradition of French shackles having holes for ancillary padlocks. Second, I just dug out my Rivolier leg irons and began thinking about what would have to be done to adapt them to the configuration which Patrick has. Lots. The screw hole would have to be drilled out and tapped, to accept a larger bolt. Then the padlock hole would need to be drilled through the lock case and a matching hole drilled in the replacement screw. And, after all that has been done, what do you have? Why bother? It's not as if this model was ever intended to be a high security item.

Having said all that, I began to look at Patrick's photos again. The plating on my set of leg irons is perfect. The plating on Patrick's is also perfect, EXCEPT in the places where the above-described alterations would need to be made. At just those places you can see traces of rust, where the plating has been compromised. Further, the indentation in the surface of the lock case, at the padlock hole, is not perfectly round and tool marks are visible. These facts argue against it being a factory original.

It's possible, of course, that it is a prototype made at the factory for a new design which was never put into production. I don't know.

I would also be surprised if the socket head cap screws are interchangeable. It can be tricky to get the holes tapped just right so when you screw them in tight that the holes like up exactly. And if these were factory, then why not do the alterations first before doing the plating and final finishing.

I am sticking to my opinion.....100% altered. Not saying that it is all bad, just that I do not believe that they were factory made with an allen bolt in them and such a crude hole drilled for them to accept the padlock. I think that the alteration was done because the original bolts were missing or someone couldn't fashion a key for the original set up. Nice piece.

BTW, what is the size of the opening in the end of the bolt? Is it metric or SAE? Our metric bolts over here in the US are painted a strange color blue and the SAE are black like the ones in the cuffs. Just curious.
