#4A few things to mention, although Stan has or had one just like this, his was attached to a restraining belt. Also it is my thoughts that it is not actually a Berliner bar cuff but that "German bar cuff" would be the better description. I'm basing this off of the quality and shape of the lock case amongst others. . Since someone so GRACIOUSLY posted this thread and the cat is out of the bag...perhaps we could get Michael Busch and Lars to weigh in on their thoughts (which Is far more educated than mine).

This is definitely a German Schwertfeger bar handcuff. I agree with you, this is not a Berliner cuff but it
share the basic design with the Berliner except there is only one bow going into each lock house.
I would say this set is very similar to one of those in Stan's former collection, the one with a belt attached.
The Schwertfeger design is known in at least three different versions which I have seen in Michael's collection.

#8I think that if someone posts an auction that is still up and ruins it for others Joseph should post the name of that person.I think you should have to log in before posting anything.I to have posted and forgot to log in but some people find stuff and other collectors might be involved in the acution so now everyone knows.

#10Lars as always thanx for info! I must show some reservation here as it's possible that the person who posted this is from the auction company or the consigner. If that's the case then more power to them for finding this sight to advertise their item. If it's another collector then I hope you a crappy holiday weekend lol.

as Lars already wrote there are three patterns of this style of German bar handcuff around, and there are some variations known (straight vs. curved bar, mirrored halves vs. identical halves). I will try to locate the pictures I have, and will post them in case they are found.
The manufacturer or manufacturers of these cuffs is unknown, and only one of the three mentioned patterns shows the patent number 247666 on the connecting middel part.

#14Further to previous questions/answers, they are not the ones that Stan had in his collection (I have these) and they do have the original leather belt attached to them. Not sure whether the key is original in my set but looking at the set that is up for auction I do not think the key is original.
As Michael and Lars state there are at least 3 different models known and I believe the set I have were almost certainly made before the Patent was issued in 1911 by Karl Schwertfeger in Hanover.
I believe my set is the only known surviving handcuffs with the belt- unless you know differently!!

#15I have a birthday coming up so I told my wife I wanted a cake at least as nice as the one Joshua got. My wife resoonded "why don't you just buy a handcuff"? So I did, I was the high bidder on the Schwertfeger.
