Just another way to cut manufacturing costs, to get a cheaper more expensive product. IMO

It may increase strength, but how many cheekplates got torn apart? My guess would be none.

Riveting them is a bit cheaper than baking them in the oven, I would assume.

The evolution of ship building was to go from riveting to welding as welding was stronger. The S&W100-1 will be another Titanic.
