Handcuff Rivets

Alright,

So, ive got my pair of cuffs. SW M100's to be more precise. I want to open the things up, but I fear I may not be able to get them back together.

I understand (I think), that to open the case of a pair of cuffs to see the lock mechanism and what not, you have to drill out the rivets. If this is incorrect, please feel free to correct me.

Now, how do I go about rivetting it back together? Are there special kind of rivets that must be used? Or will one of those cheap rivetting kits from Home Depot do?

Hi , the S&W 100 and all their current models are not actaully riveted together. The 4 circular indentations are there to align the parts together when assembling. The cuffs are held together by Silver solder? or some other medium , welding the frames and the stock together. Only the bow is attached by riveting.

If you pass a drill through the 4 indentations, you will not be able to get the stock ( lock case ) apart until you heat the cuff up to red hot and pry them apart.

LORD NO!!!

All you have to do is push that pin out just above the double lock slot and the whole thing comes out. There are 3 pieces and one is a small roller pin that is veryh small. Look in the archives where pictures were posted of what is inside the S&W M100's, about page 4 under "What's inside?"

Hi Dorson,, you are right,
all you have to do is push the pivot pin out from the case to get the pawl out and spring. I read the question as “to open the case of a pair of cuffs” and responded to ” Now, how do I go about rivetting it back together? Are there special kind of rivets that must be used? Most guys will agree - the best way to learn about locks and cuffs is to take them apart.

Then comes the really interesting part, learning to put them back together so it looks like nobody has been there . . . without having a bench full of bits left over

LOL, or having parts fly out like springs and other small parts... Spending 15 minutes or more on your hands and knees trying to find the small parts. Been there done this once too many and learned a few tricks in finding parts. Like the using a flashlight and letting the beam go parallel to the floor and hope that part is caught in the beam. Another good trick is an old magnet from the refridgerator gasket, does a good job on those tiny screws, springs, etc. and covers a large area in good time...

The more irreplaceable the part is closely linked to how far is will fly from the bench and where is will land unnoticed for months.

I agree it is Murphys Law, if something can go wrong it will. Certainly I remember my days working as a locksmith the worst situation was removing the door lock of a high value car such as a Lancia which had the Kaba type key, 6 pins with 4 possible heights - well 3 of them sprung out 3-4 hours latter they were found but what order? Had to remove another lock to decode the combination. Anyway I am getting off the subject in question regarding S&W cuffs. Last year I attended a break to destruction government conference and certainly the S&W cuffs performed exceptionally well. In fact it was not possible to delaminante them and as Ian said the locating pins are simply there to align the bodies. However, the conclusion was that the main bodies on the S&W cuffs are actually spot welded together (rather than brazed and heated together). Furthermore I agree that by removing one single pin the internal mechanism can be easily removed and I am sure that the cuffs are nickel plated before the locking mechanism and pin are put in.
