Hi from Germany,

what kind of a chain. The seller said it was "a chain handcuff from Gendarmerie of Austria", dating around WW 2 and later. The lock it's labeled with "RAPID". Material stainless steel. To carry in a olive bag.

Length overall 130 cm
Length between the small and medium ring 30 cm
Length between the middle and large ring 90 cm

Inner diameter of the rings approx

small 1,5 cm
medium 2,5 cm
large 3,5 cm

This is how they are used.



These are Italian police, or carabinieri, chain handcuffs. They have characteristic French-style braided coiled links of nickel plated steel. A number of European countries employed chain handcuffs.

Dear Jack,
the austrian chain is to big. See the comparison to the other two chains.

I've go double in the large ring and make a eight.

what do I do with the rest of the chain?



I've mailed the Bundespolizei (Austria) (http://www.bundespolizei.gv.at/lpk/) for a answer. That said I should ask the crime museum Wien, Mag. Harald SEYRL (http://www.kriminalmuseum.at/krimwien.html ). I have received a negative response. He don't now.

Jens, would the Austrian chain work as a belly chain - around the waist?
The square padlock with the Italian Chain is an original and was also used on the Bagno cuffs.

They also made such transport chains for the ankles. Of course this was likely used when the person was already loaded into the back of a prison van as there would be no walking at all with the legs chained tightly beside each other.

This may explain this outsized version.

The excess chain could then be brought up and padlocked to a similiar chain around the wrists.

there are 2 option i guess

or it is a belly chain
or it is just if you can slip the chain between the smallest ring
then put both hands in the chain the rest of the chani may function as a lead chain

I own a bagno with original leadchain from the police photos, without a separeted padlock for this item.
