The Manacle

Back in 1979 I was perusing the paperback spindle rack at the local drug store when a gleaming set of Peerless handcuffs caught my eye. The cover art belonged to a novel titled "The Manacle" by Mario J. Sagola, which has long since gone out of print.

Needless to say, I bought the book and thoroughly enjoyed this well-written suspense novel. If anyone is interested, I located the hardcover edition that features a set of possibly authentic Takeda cuffs on the jacket:

It looks like these Chief Of Police cuffs have welded links. I couldn't find the paperback edition with the Peerless bracelets on the cover, and I unfortunately must have loaned out my copy eons ago.

The story revolves around a fugitive who is forced to take refuge in a hostage's home.

The Chief of Police cuffs had some sort of soldering on the chain links....they were not full on welded but were bonded in some way. This is a "transition cuff" in my opinion. This cuff was a decent duty cuff many years ago but the later generations of this style cuff was made cheaper and cheaper. Eventually, it was transformed into a child's toy or a bedroom accessory lined with man made zebra fur complete with release switches. I like the Chief of Police cuffs and a few others of that type which are all too often dismissed as not "real" handcuffs.

My H&R Super copies also use the external star wheel in lieu of a ratchet pawl. The thing that I love about the wheel is that nobody is going to shim them open - even in single lock. On the other hand(cuff), there is so little tightening resistance that an article I once read referred to them as "self-tightening" handcuffs. Turning the key counterclockwise engages the double-lock for prisoner safety.

Thanks for the info. I have a pair of the original brass cuffs although mine don't have any markings on them.

I wonder if the Takeda marked cuffs, or the monte carlo marked cuffs were first.

I agree they progressively got worse and worse.
