Thanks to all who offer their wishes here and on Face Book.
I don't have too much planned today. I am off to the gun range to qualify and have a litle celebrating afterwords.
I love sugar snap peas (and would gladly accept Michael Busch's portion) and noticed that the Google logo was peas today so I inquired and found the below. Gregor Mendel also picked a good day to come into the world. I guess we are both pea-brains , although, I doubt he had a cuff collection.
It is also Moon Day. The Apollo 11 mission landed a man (2) on the moon today in 1969. I heard they were exploring the Earth's satelite looking for good cuffs, but all they had to do was wait a few years and send man to Patrick's handcuff-room to find the good stuff.

Google's Pea Logo For Gregor Mendel

On most of the Google home pages today, you will see a logo that looks like a pea but with scientific annotation marks around it. The logo looks like this:



Why the pea logo today?

Gregor Johann Mendel is known for discovering genetics and his birthday, July 20, 1822, was 189 years ago today. To celebrate his discovery and his name, Google made a special Google logo (aka Doodle) for him.

He is the founder of the science of genetics. He discovered it during his study of the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants. Although, the importance of this work was not realized until the 20th century.

He was born in the Austrian Empire and died on January 6, 1884 at the age of 61 in Brno, Moravia, Austria-Hungary.

While Google has a special logo from Gregor Mendel, Bing has a moon background.

Today is official Moon Day and yes, we also have a theme:



Anyway, there is the Bing theme.

Google in 2009 did have a moon day logo but not today, in respect for Gregor Mendel.

Hey Joe,
Good one. 60 degrees toward heading in the "old" direction I suspect. For the record, I tease you "older" guys because I turn the big 50 this December. Yea, I'm feeling it.

Here is one quick example from my trip to Kansas, OK, and St. Louis with Mark Lundblad, Joshua and Sarah, Karl Grice, Gordon Gluff, and my dear old (no pun intended) friend Fred Pittella. After visiting the J. M. Davis Gun museum Mark took a photo of Joshua, Freddy, and I on top of an old WW II tank. It was about 120 degrees outside, and the metal on the tank was blistering hot. (no comments Joshua!). Well, Joshua jumped down off the tank. I keep forgetting he's just a little tike at only 28 years old. So, I figured what he can do I can do. I jumped off the tank. That was late June. My knee still hurts and just came from the doctor today. She told me no jumping off any more tanks when I'm in Australia. Can you imagine that?? What is my doctor trying to tell me??

PS--Speaking of Australia--and visiting our friend Ian next week--another of our friends who, like me, has a minor phobia of spiders (LARS HOLST), commented on a previous thread about the spider infestation in Australia. Well, for Lars, should you read this---for every handcuff Ian and I make we promise to mail you a package with one little 8-legged hopefully still-living
arachnid inside. One arachnid for each cuff?? Ian, how many cuffs can you make in a week?
And the math teach in me has to ask--how many legs is that??

I want to thank everyone again for their birthday wishes and Joe L for this thread.

I had a wonderful birthday and it was filled with so many good things.
I started off, coincidentally, with an appointment I made a while ago without realizing it was going to be my birthday, for me to qualify at our sheriff pistol range. I never shot this model gun before and thought that they would allow some practice rounds before the test.
Not the case here.
I had to ask if and when I could retest if things did not go so well. I made another appointment for Aug 3.
Well, to make a long story short, I loaded up my magazines, shot, and passed the test, lickity split.



Directly after, I got a call from someone I Googled 10 years ago and have been writing to, but never met.
Bruce Sedley invented the zoo key storeybook in 1960. Many of you will remember these zoo keys. If not, you purchased the keys at the zoo souvenir shop for a quarter or more and walked up to the different animal enclosures. There, you would find an enameled metal storybook with a key hole. Put your key in and you would near a 1 minute narration about that animal.



Being a lover of things, locky, and an antique pack rat, I started collecting these colorful keys.
Doing some research, I discovered Bruce Sedley was also a puppeteer with a kids TV show in San Francisco who showed 3 Stooges movies everyday.
Being a big 3 Stooges fan, I knew I had to meet this guy. I did find him and learned that he has been living in Hong Kong for a long time.
I found his email address and we write to each other from time to time, usually around Christmas. He told me that he never heard of anyone collecting his keys before.

On my fantastic birthday, I got a call that he is in town and wants to meet me. Not only that, but to take me to lunch to discuss a business proposition. Not only does he do the zoo keys, he is the inventor of CorKey Magnetic Lock Systems and wants me to help with an assembly need that he has. We made an agreement and I am very excited about this project.



After all that, I had a nice quiet dinner and thought back on how fortunate I am to have all these friends who wished me well and all the nice positive things you said here and on my facebook.
From Hong Kong to Australia, from Germany and Holland to Canada, from New York to next door, I am very glad to have so many nice people in my life and want to thank all of you for being part of it.

John B. Your going to visit Ian pleases me (not quite as much as it will please you) and knowing what a great time you 2 guys will have adds to my euphoria today. Have fun!

Hey Mark, some years ago someone gave me a small box of keys and in it was one of those "zoo keys", I believe from "Turtle Back Zoo". I'm pretty sure I still got it somewhere - if I find it - It's got your name on it!

It's so interesting at what a "small world" the lock, key, and cuff community is. On another note to history: The Cor-Key coder's body was actually a flashlight body, a standard issue model for the boyscouts of yesteryear.
