I've never heard of the smith and wesson model 95. can anyone tell me any info on this cuff?

Model 95 was made for military use. It is basically a model 90 that has no identifying insignia other than the s&w logo. One cuff has no stampings.

My box is not plain. It actually says Model 95 on it. It resembles a american handcuff company box tho with a little bit of writing on the top.

OK, I see you already posted a picture of the cuffs on your website. Would still be interested in seeing the box. I take it since they are a Model 90 cuff that were all produced before 1980? How far back does the Model 95 go?

I always wondered about "a strange M-90" in my collection, which only bears the S&W-logo upper piece in the picture.



It also seems to have a different plating and the edges are not so smooth like the ones of a standard M-90.

What do you think is the value of such a M-95 nowadays?

I got a pair of nickle 95 accidentally when i thought i was getting model 90s. I got the black pair as a buy it now on ebay for a ridiculously low price. I would say that a set in the box is very rare, yet a set out of the box is still a great find. I have seen about 3 of them sell on ebay in the last year, but none of them i have seen have been marketed as a 95 except the one i bought. I would estimate value as about the same as a 938 stainless perhaps, because it is still basically a model 90 just a lot more rare. Just my thoughts.

I was mistaken. Stan willis's cd has the box that says model 95 after the word handcuff on second line. Mine just says handcuff. Other than that it is identical. I'm not sure if i'm allowed to post that pic because it's copyrighted. Do i just have to give him credit for that pic or do you have to get his permission first? If anyone can answer that let me know please.

Thanks for this, Blackburn. I think you are correct. A Model 95 with original box is rare, at least on Ebay.

I would think the model 95s would all be black. There's a thread a couple weeks ago where I was told there were some factory seconds sold in the 70s that didn't have the final finishing done to them and had less markings. I've got a pair of 91s that have no markings at all and confused me pretty good. Like you said, slightly sharper edges etc...

Well i can't find anything wrong with my nickle one. I really do not think it is a factory second. No flaws in the plating or anything.

Since you've got proof that there is a 95, then it may very well be 2 different things entirely. I was just thinking that since the 95 was made for the military then they would be black.

Probably not much help here, but I know there was a pair of military issued S&W handcuffs (Model 90) from 1968 on ebay last year in late August. However, the box was the regular Smith & Wesson Bangor Punta blue box for that time with a white sticker that contained various military codes and a date on it. So you may be right about it being too old for the Model 95.

I guess my next question would be is what year did S&W switch from the smaller cuff with the detent more towards the center to the larger cuff with the detent closer to the side. In other words, could my 1965 box match up with the model 95 cuff I have... hmmm.

I need some clarification on a pair of cuffs & box I received recently from an long time employee of Smith & Wesson. He works in the Springfield, MA. plant and found these in an old cabinet in the basement of the plant. He said he did not have any information on them, but thought I would like them, so he sent them to me.

The box is a plain brown box with a glued-on end label printed:

The top of box has the number 5617 in black grease pencil.

The box measurements are: 3.76" wide, 4.48" long & 1.15" deep.

Inside was a pair of blued / black cuffs that appear to be model 90's, with appropriate markings.
Right Front cuff has the S&W logo
Left Front cuff is marked:
MADE IN U.S.A.
MARCAS REGISTRADAS
SMITH 7 WESSON
SPRINGFIELD, MASS.
Right Rear cuff is marked: 143521
Left Rear cuff has no markings.

The detents are not under the key-way as M-90 later production or as far to the center as the early production, but off-set towards the center.

These cuffs have a 2-piece brass tag attached by a wire running through the the right cuff latch pivot pin hole, and through the left cuff swivel. The right cuff latch arm was not installed. The back of the brass tag has the number 11476 stamped on it and the front cover piece has the letters, DCTSC embossed on it. The back piece is crimped over the top piece to keep the wire ends concealed and easy removal without destroying the tag.

I understand this thread that the Model 95 cuffs only have the S&W logo stamped on them and no other markings, but are otherwise the same as the Model 90's.
Stan Willis showed a box & cuffs on the S&W M-91 Guatemala Marked thread with the box marked MOD. 95 & dated 10/73.
Graham Chatfield posted he had a plain box with markings similar to this one but dated 3/65 and was an empty box.
Does anyone know when S&W started producing the model 95 and if there ia any printed material on them.

A friend of mine told me that DCTSC marking on the tag might be the Defense Clothing and Textiles Center. In 1965 this center was combined with other defense supply agencies to form the Defense Logistics Agency Defense Supply Center Philadelphia (DSCP). Handcuffs fall under Federal Supply Group 84 (Clothing, Individual Equipment, and Insignia) and therefore would be handled by the DCTSC.
Another friend said it might be for the Defective Control Terminal Service Center.
Just a couple possibilities for the tag.

I don't think what you have is a model 95. I think you have a model 90 variant. It is just as rare if not more rare than a 95 tho. I have a couple cuffs that are similar in style to this one. I gotta say tho, finding one in a blued finish in that nice of condition is awesome.

Something else about that style is that it weighs less than a standard 90. The average model 90 weighs 9.3 oz that style in the few I have weighs between 8.3 to 8.7oz.

Nice find to say the least. Does the side that has the wire going through it still have a locking mechanism inside that works or has it been removed?

These weigh 8.70 ounces and the right cuff with the wire through does not lock.
What is the varient you are refering to? The detent placement?

Not only is the detent placement different, but it has the early model swivels as well. It is like a cross between an early 90 with the center detent and a later 90 with the keyhole detent.

They are fairly rare.

These swivels are different than any of my early or later model 90's I have.
My stainless models 936 & 938 have the detent in the same location as these.
Any comments on the brass tag or the box?

The Brass tag I have no idea what that means or is about. I can't really help you out with that.

I believe the swivels on the new black cuff in question match the ones on your guatemala cuff.

The box has some of the same markings as my box has. Our date code is 9 years apart. Maybe the very first military contract cuffs had full markings, then certain markings were removed in later models. Stans had a date code in 73 and his box had model 95 on it.

Did yours come with wax paper or krinkle paper of any kind?

The swivels on the black cuffs are different than on the Guatemala 91's.
These did not have any factory paper, just 2 keys.
Sorry about the poor picture, but here are the swivels on this cuff & the M-91 Guatemala.The black cuff swivel is not as heavy.

I've told Justin this a time or 2 before but the model 90s that I have with that smaller swivel also have a smaller overall size than any model 90 I've ever seen. They only weight I believe 8.2 ounces and the detents are not in the center but they are even smaller than the center detent version of the mid to late 50s.

I can't speak for anybody else's without seeing them in person but I believe the pair I have may be the early 50s model which brought about the heavier swivel "improved" model (center detent) that's marketed that way in the 1955 catalog.

Maybe they unearthed a stash of these swivels later on and used them in the 60s on some more modern cuffs. I don't know about that.

I received a pair of S&W Model 95 nickel handcuffs with the box this week. A nice addition to my Guatemala Model 91's & my Model 90 Blue Varient with DCTSC brass tag.
