What is your most prized restraint in your collection?

Since I am still collecting the more modern cuffs of Peerless and S&W, I would have to say my Peerless M-600's with the vertical keyhole would have to be my most prized cuff.

I collect many vintage and antique articles, but don't own any exotic handcuffs or restraints.
My plated Bean Prison model is my most prized set, though I really like my Cobbs, Towers and modern cuffs also.

Peerless didn't make many model 600 prototype cuffs, as these were never put into production. How far must the key turn to open the single lock?

i collect modern swing through cuffs and my collection is pretty small still a little over 50 cuffs. It's not very impressive but my most prized cuff so far is my American N400.

WOW! Good question!!!! I would have a hard time choosing between my Tower Single Lock 3-Way handcuffs and my Palmer #4 manacles (used by Steve Santini on his Much on Demand "Dead Man Walking" performance in 2005). It took me forever to find a pair of Palmers (my favorite since I was a small child from looking at Houdini photos)......but the Tower SL 3-way is so beautiful and rare, it is the only one of my cuffs to get a museum quality showcase of its very own. I HATE to leave so many others out.....but I guess I can narrow it down to these two. Please don't make me choose between them! LOL!

I would have to say my favorite in my collection is my hss9 leg irons. I have so many others that i like as well but for me they win top prize. My wife's favorite thing would have to be the pair of s&w airweight's i gave her.

My fave cuffs would be the Hiatts 115, adjustable Darbies. Mine are reproductions, but still work just fine. D--C/.

Nice to greet another collector that is interested in the modern swing through cuffs.

I'd have to say my most favorite pair would be my Bonowi trilocks. Since it's the only pair that I keep in my gun safe, then it must take the prize. That was truly one of the those puchases that opening the box was an "experience".

Now if I would've obtained the Gotchas, then it would've been a toss-up.

Probably my 1950's S&W's NIB. The box simply has a big S&W Logo on top and the words HANDCUFFS, Nickel, One Pair on the side. The indent near the keyhole is more toward the center of the cuff than underneath the keyhole as in many other Model 90's.

I have to say though that for a modern cuff I quite enjoy my S&W Model 1H. The Model 1 design that allows the cuff to accomodate both bigger and smaller wrist was practical, economical, and thoughtful. Unlike the Peerless hinged, I've never had problems with the double lock. And because it's hinged and up to Smith & Wesson quality standards, it would be a tremendous challange for a properly cuffed individual (but probably not for some of you here) to defeat it even with the key in hand. The whole thing communicates that it is serious police hardware. One improvement might be, and it probably isn't necessary or practical given what I just said, would be to make this available with the Model 104 lock.

That 1950 NIB; did you just get that off ebay for 127.00? If so, man that was a super-nice cuff. I wanted that one bad but at the time just couldn't go any higher. I think I bailed at around 100.00.

I've got a 91 that's not in the box but is the small size like that.

No, I didn't bid on that cuff. Mine was bought back in 1987. If everything was indeed legit with it, then as the seller I would have been a bit disappointed that it only fetched $128 bucks. With box, paper, and new condition it seems to come up far less often than the Model 94 (second and third versions anyways). A real prize for the S&W Collector, IMO.

I agree with you. Look at the Colts though. They come up all the time and still bring crazy prices so for whatever reason, people just get something in their mind.

I wish now I'd have went higher.

Jason: 180 degrees "plus a bit" to unlock the double lock.



Other noteables in the collection are the Peerless "Lightweight" thin cuffs in a box with red printing instead of the usual black; and Peerless aluminum cuffs that are as featherly light as S&W 926 cuffs.

But after careful consideration, although not monetarily valuable, my favorite cuff is a Peerless model 3, blued with gentle patina, and the smoothest ratchet I have ever felt.

The first series of new CLEJUSO leg iron No. 8.
It has a different key and lock than Model 2 and 3 in the photo.
First key does not fit at 2 and 3, and the other one does not fit at first!

Thanks for the info, Graham. These sound like certain South African and German cuffs whereby the single and double lock is opened by turning the key in one direction. This is a radical departure from the usual Peerless schemata.

Congratulations on obtaining this rare Peerless variant! You also mentioned that you own the rare Peerless aluminum cuffs. Do these take a double-bitted key?

My favorite is a pair of Bean prison handcuffs that were owned by The Great Wilcox, a contemporary of Houdini's. Getting it shadowbox framed with some memorabilia of him.

Just a quick response to a great thread. What is really good is that we are now seeing quite a few new collectors that are posting on the forum. We all have to remember we collectors are only custodians for a limited time in 'The Great Evolving Cosmos'
All we can try and do is preserve dates of manufacture, model numbers etc. If only we could travel back in time and visit the Hiatt Factory in 1830, 1860 and 1900 we would all be much wiser from gaining first hand knowledge of their products.
So as I said my favorite cuffs do vary, I recently came across a photo of my collection dated 1971 and think my favorite cuff was a new pair of Hiatt 101 lightweight Superintendants darby handcuffs - seem to remember waiting for the postman to knock on the door!
Most of all enjoy them and I am sure many of you will look back in 40 years time and your currently most prised restraint will be number 250!!

I think Chris is right on the money. It is very hard to select one favorite restraint year to year. It is best to enjoy what you have are at the moment knowing that things will probably change.

I have a fondness for the McKenzie mitt. It may not be the rarest restraint in the world but it is unique and mine has the additional providence of once being owned by the founder and president of the McKenzie Mitt Club, John Bushey.

I happen to agree with Chris. It is great to see that there are new collectors with the same passion of helping to fill in the missing gaps of the history of our dreaded disease.We are also very fortunate to have this site a place for all this great information to be shared and recorded.

As Chris had mention we are only temporary custodians of the actually pieces but sharing what we have learned from these pieces is amazing.
I have always believed, to me in it's not the certain piece in my collection but the FRIENDS that I meet collecting! The welcoming into there homes and seeing them beam when they show you there collection whether it's a few pieces or a roomful it's the same excitement in there voice its the same grin ear to ear so happy to share and talk about there collection. I look forward too the opportunity for sharing and visiting with more FRIENDS!!!!
