What kind of a handcuff? The key is different than the Stotz. Or is that an older Stotz?

Hi Jens,

It's very hard to tell if these are real Stotz or not. The key is not a typical Stotz but it looks very old.

The clevis and the connecting ring is very much Stotz and so are the milled notches. I have seen many Stotz
over years and also a few Stotz imitations, some of them really crude. This cuff is not crude, it's looks well made.
The top of the tubes has another shape than ordinary Stotz. These cuffs may be earlie Stotz but they could also be imitations,
made by a different manufacturer. It's impossible to tell. Not many of the original Stotz had any markings and I guess this one
is unmarked.

Cheers,

Lars

A Stotz looking handcuff was included in a Mühlenfeld catalogue. So far, not a single "Stotz" with a Mühlenfeld
stamping is known to exist.
My theory is that Mühlenfeld was a distributor of Stotz handcuffs and never manucatured the style themselves.
The key on the picture looks exactly like a standard Stotz key. I don't beleive Guenter's slightly heavier set of
Stotz was manufactured by Mühlenfeld.

Other Mühlenfeld handcuffs and leg irons are much heavier (except for the No 113, AKA the Dortmunder) than the
Stotz which made them a lighter compliment in Mühlenfeld's wide supply of police equipment. Beside manufacturing
restraints, Mühlenfeld offered a wide selection of police equipment like uniforms, sabers, patches and badges.

Can you assume that my copy is?
I've got no idea!

I ask the question again, what would now be the estimated value of this object? Just a question.

The key does not fit the catalog.

Hi Jens,

It's often impossible to tell the origin of antique restraints as there is no historical documentation. We can assume and make qualified guesses based on our experience and known facts.
If you ask for my personal opinion, my guess is that these cuffs very well might be early and original Stotz as the general design, the shape to the hinges, the size of the connecting ring coincides with the Stotz. The imitations I've seen are all much cruder in appearance.

My assumption may be wrong and other knowledgeable collectors may disagree with me. Take my opinion for what it's worth.
You have to excuse me but I refrain from making an appraisal.

I very much would like to hear what Michael Busch think, he is our best expert on antique German restraints.

Hi Lars,

no problem, we wait times from what Michael Busch (Vincula, I know) it says. My question was referring more to the value if I may have paid too much. I'll keep them, not sell. For that I am a collector enough.

Thank you for your evaluation in this cuffs. This shows me again why I registered here.

Hi Jens,

excellent find!

IMHO your cuff is much more interesting than a "common" Stotz. I have never seen this variant before.

I think that I have a Mühlenfeld Stotz in my collection this one:

But it looks different to your one, too.
In case that you ever want to sell this Stotz, please feel free to make me an offer.

Best regards,
Guenter

Good morning,

thanks for the congratulations. Through you I've paid 46 more, you 5 but not enough. Compared with their estimated price I paid very little money. I am happy that the interest in the handcuffs is large and the numerous postings. To counteract purchase offers. Currently, the cuffs are not for sale, because I still have joy in collecting.

best regards

Jens
