Peerless model # stamping on cuffs

Does anyone know the year when Peerless actually stamped Model 300 or Model 301 on the cuffs? I know the cuffs I bought in 1991 did not have the Model stamped on them and came in a two-piece brown box. The cuffs I bought in December of 1997 did have the model number stamped on them and came in a grey box. So I have the range dates of 1991-1997 but would appreciate a bit more precision here.

In a related question, did the box change from brown to grey coincide with the new model stamping?

I bought a pair of pre-model-number Peerless 10 oz. cuffs in '98 that had the newer box. I don't know when these were actually manufactured and I'm unable to remember when they actually started stamping the model numbers on their cuffs.

After an eternity of making essentially the same cuffs, they suddenly came out with a flurry of new models in the late '90s/Y2K period.

Do you think your cuffs had sat on the shelf for a while? Otherwise, a pre-Model 300 bought new in 1998 would suggest, it seems to me, that Peerless began stamping their cuffs rather late in the decade (i.e., 1997-1998). It would have had to have been an incredible short run as its ultimate successor, Model 500, was available in 1998/1999. This would be puzzling because there are so many stamped Model 300's popping up on eBay. You're right about the rapid changes taking place between 1998-2002. Every year it seemed like there was another new series. I never did get the chance to pick up the M-400's.

LK, thanks for the reminder. I thought, however, that this would be an easy enough question for the forum members to answer. Especially the change in boxes. My experience too has been that they have always been helpful.

Last year I emailed Peerless (Chris Gill), to find out a manufacture date on a pair of Peerless cuffs I have, thinking they should have a model number on them. His response to me was, our first models marked with model numbers were introduced in March 1995. The pair I was inquiring about were manufactured 11/27/1990.

Yes, I agree that my pre-model-number cuffs were "new old stock".

On another topic: I believe that Peerless flipped the 6 digit odometer on or about 1992. While they hadn't yet stamped them with a model number, subsequent pairs had the inclusion of a number sign (#) preceding the serial number.

The chunky, short-lived model 400 was relegated to the obsolete pile, due to a fault in the sintering process. The successive model 500 was initially a laser etched model 300. Subsequent model 500 cuffs would incorporate the new swivels.

Prototype model 600 cuffs were never actually produced en-masse, though were the first model to incorporate the current spun rivet construction.

Actually weren't the first model 500s mechanically engraved? I've got the corner stamped 500s and they are engraved, unlike the laser etched versions and different than the stamped 300s. Plus the overall finish isn't like the 300s in my opinion.

My mistake; I completely forgot about the round corner stamped model 500. I've owned several pairs of pre-model-number Peerless cuffs, including a new-old-stock set, though I only own one M-500. How did the overall finish differ from that of the model 300? One small detail that I noted is that my M-500 has a flush push-pin, much like those on my vintage S&W cuffs.

All the 300s that I've got, have rounded corners and a very consistant finish. All my 500s seem to have sharper corners and just an overall less "finished" appearance. Maybe cheaper produced would be an accurate way of describing it.

This is all just my opinion based on the 3 pair of model 300s I have and 5 or 6 model 500s. All the plating on my 300s is very consistant as well and more buffed or polished looking whereas my 500s all have a grainy appearance to them.

Just my opinion though for what it's worth.

I've noted inconsistencies in the plating composition and or finish even before the inclusion of the model numbers. My first pair had a glass-like nickel-silver type of plating that resembled antique silver when it tarnished with age. More recent examples have a less reflective, somewhat yellow, grainy type of plating. I believe that the former was also used on all model 3 nickel cuffs.

Do any or all of your M-500 cuffs have flush pushpins?

Jason, thanks for the info about the serial numbering. I did know about the problem with the Model 400 and I actually got to handle a pair some years ago. I actually prefer the chunky, bulkier feel of the 400 than anything out of their other chain series. Yet, as another member noted here long ago, the problem for the police officer is that he wouldn't know if the pair he had had made it through the sintering process okay or not.

Jason, does the grey box you have say Model 300 on it? If it doesn't, then I have the answer to my other question as to whether the stamp Model designation coincided with the change in the box. If it does, then your cuff would likely have been produced in early 1995.

Correct. Kind of like a "cold solder joint" in the electronic world.

Unfortunately, since the finish wasn't what I had come to expect on this pair, I immediately packed them back up and sold them on the bay. I don't recall there being a model number on the box, though I can't be certain of that at this point.
