RCS 1941 Size 2 Number 1785

Hi

Not sure if anyone can help me. We have recently been left a pair of handcuffs from my Grandfather. We have spent a while searching the internet and think we have found the correct details, and this seemed the best site to ask for advice. The handcuffs have RCS and 1941 with the number 1785 inscribed onto them and they also have the number 2 with 2 notches on the clasp (not sure of the technical name!). There is also a number 13 with an arrow by the hinge. We have searched but unfortunatley not been able to find a key. Do these sound real? and if so what price could we expect to get for them?

Hi Sarah:

Your handcuffs certainly sound genuine (but a photo will be 100% certain).

My guess is that the handcuffs are valued in the $50-$75 range.

Why did your grandfather have them - was he a police officer?

I would think that they have a much greater sentimental value over a monetary value.

If you have a photo of your grandfather in uniform...that photo along with these cuffs - would make a nice "shadow box" display for your family.

Sarah, hello. Are you in England? I only ask because the handcuffs which you described are, of course, British. A photo would greatly assist our appraisal of such item.

Hi Sarah,
RCS stands for Reuben Craddock and Sons.
If you look at the story a few below this one "Backstrap Darby Survey" you can see if your cuffs match the ones in the pictures, but if yours have the stampings you describe then they are real. Value probably as described above depending on condition and whether there are keys or not.

I think I have managed to upload a picture. Yes I am for England. As far as I am aware there is no history of these belonging to my Grandad originally. He was interested in a lot of things and aquired them from car boot sales/antique shops in his time (we have a wide range of random objects!). As they have no sentimental value we were thinking of selling them as they really should go to someone who appreciates them more than we do.

Based on your description and your photo, these are false backstrap darbies made by Reuben Craddock Sons in 1941 for the British government. The arrow you describe near the hinge is almost certainly the "Broad Arrow", often referred to as the "crowfoot." It indicates Crown property.
