Another cuff NOT to purchase unless you collect this sort of thing.
This seller is selling an "authentic P.O.S." and claiming:

THIS AUCTION IS FOR AN AUTHENTIC ANTIQUE PAIR OF SOLID CAST IRON HANDCUFFS #147 FROM THE HISTORICAL WYOMING FRONTIER PRISON IN RAWLINGS THAT ONCE HOUSED INMATES FROM 1901-1981 COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL WORKING KEY #147.

These hand cuffs are a remnant of the grizzly past of the old west. Wyoming Frontier Prison Rawlings which was known to be a gruesome prison closed its doors to the last inmate in 1981. It is now preserved as a historical museum & displays part of the old west wild ways as they used to be years ago. These handcuffs are solid cast iron with the numbers #147 on both the handcuffs as well as the cast iron key. A brass plate is clearly readable WYOMING FRONTIER PRISON RAWLINGS. Side to side they measure 11 & 1/2" wide by 3".. They are authentic & not a modern copy. Working key turns to open them well. Who knows whose wrists these handcuffs have secured...just a great piece of the Wild Old West's history. They are being sold with NO RESERVE.($125)

The design is different from the usual junk that clogs the pages of eBay.
These have a bulkier end cap than a real darby cuff.

A Folsom Prison variation of the same cuff exists
Both have the same font stle (Algerian) and would be way too elaborate for a prison to feature.
The expense to produce a name plate with fancy engraving on it is not something a prison would allocate funds for.

They once were real. Maybe someone in India or Pak still makes service quality Darbies. I have a pair of duty quality Indian or Paki Darbies. They have most of the characteristics of the fakes, including the folded hings, but they are solid. I picked them up at the Indy Lock Show, this year.

"Found in in Old Barn in Pennsylvania"

It is amazing how many Indian (or Pakistani) fake leg irons find their way into an old barn, waiting to be discovered by an heir of the guy who put them there.
I wonder if in reality, they were really located at a gun show or flea market and someone, filled up to their eyeballs with greed, wishes to make a fast buck off of an innocent buyer.

Years ago I was at an antique show and there was an interesting pair of cuffs. I asked the dealer if he knew any history about them and he looked me in the eye and with a slight smile said
"what would you like to hear". We both had a good laugh.

It's bad enough when people try to "customize" a piece of crap. But what is really annoying is when they deface a legitimate piece in an attempt to enhance its value to collectors. I was at a flea market some years ago and found a beautiful set of Providence Tool Company leg irons. Except that the jackass had taken a set of letter punches and added "Andersonville Prison" to each cuff. The strikes were fresh; he hadn't even tried to age them. There was a relatively high asking price, for the time, but which I would have gladly paid had it not been for the addition.

It's not well known, but this process was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1756.

They're available at wholesale, complete with the brass tags. I can't find the old catalog, and the firm has no website. The name "Great Western Trading" comes to mind, but a Google search was not fruitful; there is about a million GWTs, but apparently not the "right one." I found them at the ASD (Military Surplus) show in Lost Wages a few years ago, along with a bunch of direct Indian Importers of similar stuff.

BudK Knives sells them retail in the $20 range. Their wholesale price ought to be about 2/3 of that. At least they describe them fairly.
