A collector asked for some help figuring out on what these may have been used for? He says they will fit a wrist but not an ankle. No provision for any kind of lock.

Thanks,

Damon

Damon, there's a chance that those are horse hobbles, not human restraints. Maybe even a one-off set, not from mass production.

That would be my guess.

Chuck- That is kind of what the owner and I thought but the size is very small. The owner said it wouldn't fit a human ankle. Would the connecting strap be strong enough to hold an animal without breaking?

The standard buckles wouldn't lend itself to a criminal restraint. Maybe a hospital? Medical straps usually are designed to restrain on each side, not together.

The buckle strap looks thin, maybe one inch. And the sewing looks very well done. These could be for ponies or very young horses; I doubt they would hold a race horse.

But I'm totally guessing here, and still think they could be one of a kind.

My guess is the 1920s were more kinky than we thought.

Well, they obviously are too small and too lightweight to be anything serious. Looks like 2 more identical buckle pieces were used to affix the connecting strap so in all honestly, I'd be they were / are some old "fun" kinky wrist restraints custom or handmade by someone.

Maybe they were Bess's.
Houdini and Bess did have to endure those long sea voyages together and we know that Adams hurt after a while.

No reason it couldn't be a custom piece for a vet to use at their clinic or even during surgery, or post-op.
