A nice item recently sold in UK which looked more like leg irons, but dimensions show that they were handcuffs. The chain is not the usual twisted link I'd expect to see on a long-chain handcuff or a leg iron and the key looks like the chunky Boer War style. If anyone has any thoughts about their age or who made them, I'd be interested to know.

I have been looking at them closely. Sorry I can't identify them either. I would really be interested in knowing if they have any marks on them. very interesting. I bid, but not enough.

Yes, I bid too, but they went for twice as much as I thought they were worth! Shows how much I know.
George gave it a good crack but only had the second highest bid of about $1050.
Funnily enough, George still owes me AU$932.19 OR he can post the cuffs I bought.

Paul and Joe- I won the cuff. Ill take a close look and post some photos when they arrive. I dont recall seeing any plug cuffs with this type of linkage. I remember seeing a cuff with a thick chain but not the extra links.

Glad to know they are in good hands. I think cuffs of this vintage were often made to order so I am not surprised to see and unusual linkage. It will interesting to see if there are any marks on them.

The plug cuffs arrive today. Very hard to see the manufacturers name unless you hit them just right with light. They are Hiatts. The cuffs are very small about 1 7/8 x 2 1/4.

Thanks-Sadly no original plugs but the locks work very smoothly and the hinges are tight and smooth as is the swivel.

They look very old to me and the serif font for Hiatt is also a clue.
The oval links instead of twisted links are interesting - not often used.

John Bushey did an awesome job making plugs. Because they were so small John had to make them the old fashioned way, by hand, with a file. They are perfect.
