I heard a rumor once that j. edgar hoover had a personal collection and was a collector! does anyone know if that is correct and were his collection might be!

But, seriously, if such a collection existed it would probably now be in either the FBI museum or the Smithsonian. Hoover's will is in the public record. If they were not specifically mentioned, the collection would have passed to Clyde Tolson by default. Tolson's will is also in the public record and might be worth checking. But since he was also a childless bachelor (heh, heh!), I think that the two museums mentioned above are the best bet.

Washington, DC When the National Law Enforcement Museum opens in Washington, DC, in 2013, it will house one of the most extensive collections of objects related to the life and work of long-time FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, Museum officials announced Wednesday.
