early Peerless

I just bought an early pair of Peerless model 3s on e-bay.
They are clearly model 3s, but have no serial number. Peerless advises that they may be a pre-production model, but don't know for sure. They may just be a factory error.
Compared to a 1970s(?) pair, they are heavier. The metal is very slightly thicker overall, including the chain and swivels as well as the cheekplates and bows. Build quality and what's left of the blued finish remind me of model 2s. The springs are quite stiff, and the ratchet teeth are very cleanly cut.
Has anyone run across anything similar? I don't know if I have a true rarity or not.
