Adams cuffs? Please help me ID.

Hello!

I'm hoping someone here can help me. I came across this pair of cuffs and want to know more about them. I believe they are the Adams model but I can't find any stamp or marking on them. Does that mean they're a reproduction? The ratcheting is on the outside of the cuffs, if that matters, and they seem to be iron (magnets love them).

My questions are:

1.) What is the model? Possible age?
2.) What oil can I use to loosen up the hinges?
3.) Where can I get a key?

You indeen have Adams handcuffs. Two models out there, the patent applied for and the Patent model. 1962 patent date. If you need keys let me know. I have some in stock. John

If you soak the hinge area in ANY oil for a few hours and then try to move the clevis (loop at the hinge). It may be firm to start and only more s fraction but once it starts it will allow more oil to get between. Flex it back and forth, back and forth. Easiest once you have a key to open the cuff, but you could start soaking them now. Don't be put off by all the possible postings here for which brand name works best. They all work.
And check of John Bushey for a key.

HI ALICE, THE DATES ARE FOUND ON THE BOW (THE PART WITH THE NOTCHS) THEY ARE PATENT APPLYED FOR AND PATD. JUNE 17 1862,I ALSO HAVE A MODEL STAMPED PATD. APRIL 24,1862 THE D IN PATD HAS A LINE UNDER IT,MINE ALL HAVE 8 NOTCHS, LOOKS LIKE YOURS HAS MORE BUT THEY ARE ADAMS,IF YOU GO BACK TO THE MAIN PAGE ,HIT SEARCH AND THEN TYPE IN ADAMS YOU WILL FIND IT VERY INTERESTING, NICE CUFFS

Is there a way to tell the difference between a patent pending and a patented set?

When did they stop manufacturing Adams cuffs? I'm trying to narrow down the age of mine.

Will WD-40 work okay for the hinges?

WD40 will work, any wet solution should. The hinges are dry and dirt solid, wetting it will get in and free the particles and lossen the hinge.

IF UNMARKED OR THE MMARKING ARE WORN OFF IT WOULD BE HARD TO SAY FOR SURE ,HOWEVER GO BACK TO MAIN PAGE AND CLIK HOME,THEN DOWN TO HANDCUFF MANUFACTORS AND THIER WARES, THEN TOWER AND READ THE FIRST 5 OR SO PARAGRAPHS, I BELIEVE YOUR SET WAS MADE BETWEEN 1862 AND 1865 BUT ????

IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE MORE NOTCHED SETS WERE MADE LATER THEN THE 8 NOTCHS SETS! AGAIN ?????

I have always enjoyed your posting here and value the content of your entries.
I will try to put it delicately, but straightforward.
Your use of all CAPITAL letters is, lets say bothersome (for me)to read.
Please do not be upset with me, but I believe it is proper to use lower case lettering when writing and all caps is acceptable for headlines or exaggerated statements.
Some might argue that all caps is the equivalent to shouting.
Recently, I am now required to wear glasses while reading and just thought I might offer this suggestion to you.
I hope there is no ill will towards me for writing to you and I considered writing to you in private, but others have a similar writing style and this is directed to them as well.
If a sight problem or even a bad computer keyboard is making this style of writing the only possibility, then so be it.
I just thought I might say something to you and be able to read what you are stating with out straining my poor ole eyes.

I am told that using ALL CAPS in correspondence is considered too be like shouting and many people do feel it is rude .

Unless a writer is using the ALL CAPS along with an exclamation point , ( LIKE THIS !!! ) it does not register as shouting too me and I hardly notice it .

On a free chat site I go to frequently , I don't bother to point this out to people as they are either unknowing or unwilling to listen and make an adjustment to this behavior .

( IE , it does no good too point it out )


On a note about the Adams cuffs , were these cuffs bodies made from cast iron or cast steel ? I do notice that some of them listed on eBay have broken hinges . ( possibly from a sticky hinge being forced to open ) ???
