Police clamshell holsters

good evenings , i am seeking information and possble catalogs for old police clamshell holsters , like , speed safety, jewett, hoffman and sons and stanroy , any and all help would be greatly appreciated , many thanks smiley

This ain't handcuffs, but it's good to know I'm not the only one who collects these.

Stanroy built the holsters from mid 30's to early 60's here in Bakersfield, CA. Phil Jewett, the patent holder/designer was his son-in-law. He was a deputy with Kern County Sheriff's Office and, as I understand, went to the California Highway Patrol later.

Stanroy lived near the wrecking yards and the frames were stamped from old auto fenders. He and Jewett went through a slection of names, but if it's marked "Bakersfield, Calif." it is an original.

So far as I know Stanroy or Jewett never had a catalog. You just went by his house and told him what you wanted and he made it.

I chased family in hopes of finding the old dies or parts for a while but no luck.

Just a quick note, not handcuffs but definately in the same spirit. I have collected clamshells for over 20 years, still carry one on duty, and have over 100 different examples. Jewitt actrually did send out a sort of catalogue, with prices, models available, and even a way to request a holster to try out, with pictures!. I have this paperwork which came with one of the early Jewitt's, which had the double belt loop on it, if one wanted to carry this as a high ride plainclothes holster. I notice the models after about 1942 did not even offer this. Both are welcome to email at the above address to discuss further, now back to the cuffs

Tim, thanks for the great new info. I've been accumulating them for about the same period, but don't have quite that many and never saw a double belt loop or any paper work. Do have some go-withs, though.

Smiley has a real unusual one, by the hallmark.

Joe, I've been accumulating these things and fiddling around with writing an article for years, but always ran short of enough info to be good.

With this latest info we just might come up with something and take you up on your offer. Right now we're just trading info, pics and related stuff. But it looks like it could actually be enough to get going on it. Rob's got an odd transitional one and got this ball rolling. Tim's got a great load of info and a bunch of specimens.

Sure appreciate the offer and for your generosity in letting us take up space on this great website.

By the way, I was only kidding about clamshells.org.

PS: Does anyone out there have any idea how to obtain still photos from old TV series? Adam-12 always started with whatever their names were (Martin Milner and Kent McCord in real life) jumping out of their patrol car at a hot call and grabbing their revolvers which came flying out of their clamshell holsters. Very dramatic! Always wanted a still copy of that scene for an article. Definately the highlight of clamshell history.

PPS: A couple guys over the years in my department, did that fast draw bit and managed to put a few bullets in places where they weren't wanted at a time when they weren't welcome. Oops!

I have a safety speed clamshell holster from the LAPD. I think it's from the late 70's, anyone know what it's worth? It's in fair to good condition and shines up very nice.
